Belkin Surge Protector 8 Outlet With Telephone, RJ45 & Coax Protection Review
What makes this Surge protector stand out is it's RJ-45 (Network/internet) protection. With so many devices like TV's, Blu-ray players, and of course computers having an internet connection, this is another weak spot in surge protection. With this strip, you can protect every connection coming in to your device. The only watchout is that there's only 1 RJ-45 connection. Therefore, if you have more than one network cable to protect (For instance to both your PC and printer; or both your TV and Blu-ray player), you'll either need additional units, or you'll need to put this in-line with your router.
I prefer the latter approach and have placed this where my telephone lines and cable enter my basement. I also have my router in the same location. Therefore, I can plug the incoming cable line and telephone line into this. Those then go to splitters to service the rest of the house. I plugged in my cable modem and router, and passed the LAN (Cat5/6) cable through this surge protector between the cable modem and my wireless router. In this way, I'm hopefully protecting all my telephones and other Cat5 wires, and cable outlets throughout my house.
The only thing to watch for at this point is to make sure that my actual electrical connections to any phone, computer or cable tv are also on surge protectors. I wouldn't want a surge entering though the electric lines, then backfeeding through the phone/internet/cable wires.
The gray piece pictured on the bottom of the unit slides upward, allowing you to place the cable underneath it. Then you push it back down and it keeps them held tight. This is ok, but your cable won't always need to go that direction. The switch has a rubber cover and is recessed somewhat to try and prevent accidentally turning it off.
The one thing that doesn't work well are the sliding outlet covers. It's virtually impossible to slide them. I couldn't budge them with bare hands, and when I used a screwdriver, I had to push so hard I ended up gouging the platic.
The low profile plug is nice, but doesn't rotate as some of the nicer strips I have do. Therefore, if your devices are to the left of the outlet, the cord is pointing the wrong way coming out of the outlet.
In terms of the warranty - read it carefully. It expects you to keep the receipt not only for this unit, but also for the equipment being protected.
