Medialink - HomePlug AV 200 Mbps Powerline Ethernet Starter Kit - (2 Adapters Included) Review

I've been an avid fan of the more recognized names in networking, i.e. Netgear, D-Link, Linksys/Cisco. But when we rearranged the rooms of our house and had hardware now in rooms without connections I had to find something that would allow ethernet into those rooms without dragging Cat6 throughout the house.
My initial thought was to use the Netgear or Belkin equipment, but the cost was more than I would have wanted as I needed 4 adapters. I came across Medialink and while it's not a company I necessarily knew, the reviews were all good so I gave them a shot.
Pros
- First and foremost performance was on point. Not getting 200Mbps, but the transfer is really good for ethernet over powerlines and considering I'm jumping multiple circuits.
- Software, there is software that comes with the devices that allows you to monitor them and the signal performance.
- Security. I really hadn't thought about this before, but if I use ethernet-over-powerlines technically someone could connect to the external power plugs and gain access to the network. These devices come with a basic encryption security system where you pair devices and then pair the paired devices with new adapters to create larger networks of adapters. Great feature to have and brings more security peace of mind.
- Price, can't argue with the cost, these units are great!
Cons
- The security pairing was the thing that got me tripped up when I installed these 4 adapters. The instructions originally indicate that you have to press and hold the security button for 15 seconds on the first adapter and then within a minute hit the security button (2 seconds) on each subsequent adapter to form a network. I found this to be ineffective. To make this work I did the following:
1. The adapter that is plugged into my main switch is adapter 1. I press and hold the security button on adapter 1 for 15 seconds.
2. Once that's complete, on adapter 2, I press and hold the security button for 2 seconds. Both power lights will blink until their sync and go solid green.
3. Then on adapter 2, I press and hold the security for 2 seconds and then on adapter 3 I did the same.
4. Then on adapter 3 I press and hold the security for 2 seconds and then on adapter 4 I did the same.
Much much easier than the directions that came with the device, but really that was the only downside that I found.
All in all, I'd definitely recommend this for anyone who is tired of the inconsistency with 802.11x but don't want to have Cat6 all over the place!
