When I first installed this adapter, I was thrilled because my signal from the network was so much stronger than previously. In fact, I could see 7 or 8 networks in the area that I was unaware of. Unfortunately, my XP laptop then evidenced signs of instability. It would freeze, the cursor would stop working and some programs would not open when double-clicked. This is especially apparent when the machine has been in standby or hibernation. I saw reviews on other sites attributing this to the Alfa software. I uninstalled this, and picked up the chipset drivers from the Realtek site. Although the Realtek software installed fine, it never gave me the signal strength out of the adapter that the Alfa software did.
I ended up keeping the adapter for one particular work location, where I am so far from the wireless router that I live with system instability in return for being able to connect. At other locations, I use the built-in adapter in the laptop. If you are planning on relying on the Alfa as your only network adapter on an XP machine, it would make sense to plan for the driver and memory conflicts that appear to be endemic to it.
Update: Blue Screen of Death!
Troubleshoot a problem with a device driver
You received this message because a device driver installed on your computer caused Windows to stop unexpectedly. This type of error is referred to as a "stop error." A stop error requires you to restart your computer.
Once again, I downloaded the latest RTL8188RU driver from the Realtek site. This time, instead of installing the whole software package, I just updated the driver. As soon as I did, signal strength dropped by over 50%. I rolled back the driver, and signal strength increased. I am dropping my rating to two stars, and hope this problem will be rectified in future updates. (The driver update I used was from 29-July-2011.)
