After returning this unit last year (10/30/2010) due to firmware troubles, I thought that I would give the R36 another try based on recent positive reviews. I was surprised that it came with the latest firmware from Alfa (R36-1.2.0.7) dated 7/20/2011.
I am pleased with the difference the current firmware makes. Connections are very stable and equally as fast as connecting the AWUS036H directly to a PC or Mac. (note: Alfa does not have AWUS036H drivers for OSX Lion, unless you boot into Lion in 32-bit mode). This makes using the R36 convenient for connecting from OSX Lion 64bit.
I would recommend the R36 to anyone who wants to use it with the AWUS036H. Google "Data Alliance R36 easy setup". They have a setup guide that was very helpful. I bought my R36 through them.
Alfa makes using my AWUS036H (1mW) with the R36 a great combination. Also, I found using the 7dBi panel antennas (by Alfa) made noticeable differences in download speeds and signal strength.
UPDATE 10/4/11:
I noticed that the range was only about 30 to 40 feet before connections started slowing down. But for a portable mobile extender it seems somewhat acceptable. I did have to occasionally restart the R36 to restore my connection. A bit finicky, but still much improved from a year ago. I tried using an 18dBi Yagi antenna on the Awus036h but performance was surprisingly worse than the 5dBi omni and 7dBi panel antennas.
