Cisco-Linksys WPC600N Ultra RangePlus Dual-Band Wireless-N PC Card Review

This wireless adapter is great. I'm using it with the Linksys WRT600N Router. I've heard that people have had issues using the Linksys wireless utility that gets installed when you run the startup CD, so I installed the adapter first, and then when windows prompted me for a driver I put the cd in. That way I just used the CD for the drivers and did not install the wireless utility that comes with it. I haven't had any issues using the standard Windows wireless configuration tools. I would also recommend changing the radio band on the Linksys WRT600N router from Auto to the Wide-40mhz channel (for the 5ghz network only, leaving the 2.4ghz wireless network setting to auto) then connect to the 5ghz network using the WPC600N and have all of your other b, g and 2.4ghz-N devices connect to the 2.4ghz wireless network. This setup has worked great for me, I'm really happy with both products.

Refurb Wireless Dual N Router WRT610N-RM Review

Pros: Great speed. Wireless is only less than 5% slower than ethernet connection. USB link port is very solid.
Cons: Not designed for people who want plug & play devices with no knowledge of networking.
I will agree with a lot of people regarding people that stated that this router is no good. Those people do not know what they're doing.
I bought a REFURBISHED version 1... and it works perfect. After reading so many bad reviews, I had the feeling that all refurbished WRT610Ns were probably from people who didn't know how to get it to work properly.****HOW TO PROPERLY SETUP A WRT610N ROUTER****
1) Download the latest firmware to your computer from Linksys' website. Do this even before you receive your WRT610N. Reading all the comments about the firmware, I didn't even bother trying the stock firmware.
2) Upon receiving the router, plug in the power cable and plug it into the AC outlet. No CAT5 cables yet.
Once it powers up, hold the reset button for a few seconds until the power light starts to blink. Release the reset button.
3) Once it powers up completely, plug your computer to the router with a CAT5 cable. Log into the router. Upload the new firmware.
4) After the upload is complete, unplug the power cable from the router, wait a few seconds, then plug it back it. This is to be assure the load was good.
5) Wireless configurations:
#1 Rule: Do not use auto on both G and N. Set 2.5Ghz band for B-G only and to a certain channel (6 or 11 works best). And set 5Ghz band for N only.
#2 Rule: Do not use the same encryption on both G and N. Set different encryption methods (example., WPA2 for G, WEP for N)
6) Disconnect the CAT5 cable, and try connecting to the N-wireless (do not connect to G. this is for testing purposes) Once your pc connects to the N network wirelessly, log into the router wirelessly.
7) 5Ghz in its nature is a sensitive frequency. The higher the frequency, the weaker the signal gets... but also gets faster. With that said, the 5Ghz N portion needs to be tweaked to what works best.
- On your computer, open up the Wireless Network Connection Status window. Leave this window open at all time so you can see the connection speed (If you have more than one pc with wireless N, do the same thing).
- Log into the router via wireless N. Go to Wireless Advanced section. Band: do not set AUTO on the band. Start off with 40Mhz. From there, pick the first channel (44 or something like that).
- Now check the speed(s) of the pc connection(s). Try out ever 40Mhz band until you find the best speed. If no band is solid, then result to 20Mhz. Once most solid and fastest speed is achieved, save the configs.
COMPLETE!
USB Link:
The USB link worked great. But there are some pointers. I tried two harddrives. 320GB 5400RPM SATA and 320GB 7200RPM SATA. Both were clones of each other; clean NTFS formatted with nothing but videos and music. I would recommend to edit SHARE and click on SHARE ENTIRE PARTITION. It seems much more fluid with that on. Ok, after I named my drive, shared the whole partition, and clicked on access rights, I mapped the drive to each computer to test the stability and speed. I did have a problem with my music folder that had 355 sub-folders (individual albums); it would randomly see all 355 folders. It would see 210, then 340, the 290, etc. It was a strange behavior. Since both harddrives were clones of each other, I formatted one harddrive using the Linksys Router function. It formatted the drive to NTFS FAT2. First time I've used FAT2. After I copied the contents back to the drive, I tested it again. It actually finds the files much faster than before. Don't know why. I haven't had a problem with missing folders either. Everything is found instantly. So I would highly recommend to format using the Linksys Router function. I did test out between 5400rpm and 7200rpm to see which would be better for a media storage. Attached to the linksys, neither one of them showed an real differences. I tried file transfer, playing lossless music, pictures, HD movies... all had the same performance. So I would recommend to just pick a 5400rpm since it runs on lower power consumption.
Stress Test:
I ran a very thorough performance test to see if this router could handle it.
Laptop #1 - wireless N 300Mbps connection
Laptop #2 - wireless N 280Mbps connection
Laptop #3 - wireless G 54Mbps
PS3 - wireless G 54Mbps
Wii - wireless G 54Mbps
NAS Harddrive on USB Link port
Laptop #1 to download multiple 3-5GB files from the internet.
Laptop #2 was streaming an HD movie 1080p from the NAS harddrive.
Laptop #3 was streaming lossless music from the NAS harddrive (54Mbps is too slow for HD movies)
PS3 was in an online game session (Marvel vs Capcom 2) as a spectator watching everyone play
Wii was set to stream a tv channel (Japanese Wii)
Laptop #1 was downloading at 35Mbps (which is about 2Mbps slower than when directly connected to the internet modem without Linksys). So that was still downloading at flying speeds even with all the traffic. Laptop #2 had no problem streaming an HD movie. There was some bit delay if I paused the movie or FF. But playing the movie, switching languages on the fly, etc... had no problems at all. It played smoothly. Laptop #3 was playing flac lossless audio files while browsing through the folders with no problems. PS3 never lost the connection to the online game. And the Wii never froze with the tv channel. I ran this test overnight with no problems at all.
Conclusion: This router works. It's very fast, stable, and had no problems. Just make sure you configure it properly. One piece of advise regarding wireless cards, stay away from the Intel N cards. They work poorly with the Linksys N routers. I tried three different Intel N cards and two Linksys N routers. I was never able to achieve a 300Mbps connection with any configuration.
I hope you will find this review helpful.

Cisco-Linksys E3000 High-Performance Wireless-N Router Review

Set this up yesterday. Didn't use the included cd, but instead chose to go in manually and set it up via web page config mode. Whole thing took maybe 45 minutes.
Everything looks the same as my old wrt54g router which was creeping on its way to the old age home and who's signal would die every time I'd fire up the microwave.
Easy setup, blazing speeds, setup port forwarding for my xbox 360, port forwarding for my air video server to stream DVR video to my iPhone and iPad, turned on firewall and made sure VPN pass thru was enabled. Set a password on router to change from default. Setup DHCP to have a 7 day lease.
We have almost a completely wireless house. A blackberry, iPhone, iPad, xbox360, netbook, 2 laptops, HTPC, Hp Printer and a desktop.
Everything is hooked up wireless except the desktop.
Setup the 5ghz with a unique SSID and password and connected the xbox360. Tested a 1080i streaming video from xbox live, worked flawlessly. Tried to hook the HTPC into the 5ghz but could not due to an issue with the pc's NIC (probably with a driver, I'll mess with it later). Put the iPad on the 5ghz and it hooked in flawlessly and streamed video like a champ.
Everything else went on the the 2.4ghz band. Setup the same SSID and password that I used on my old linksys and then unplugged the old router. Everything hopped right over to the new one.
Speed seems better on everything. The UnPnP feature resolved some issues I had between xbox and getting media off other pcs.
Tested VPN pass thru to make sure I could connect back to work network.
Only thing I have not tried is the Storage server option.
Definately a solid router so far.

NETGEAR N600 Wireless Dual Band Router WNDR3400 Review

We've had this router for a couple weeks now, and I must say I'm nothing other than happy.
One person streaming movies to Xbox, playing shoot-em-up game on PS3, and surfing the web all at the same time and everyone is happy. I didn't have any trouble with setup (I did not use the setup CD). Instead, our old router was a netgear and I just copied most the old configuration and used my brain to figure out the new wireless settings. (they're not so hard)
My only complaint is the ring of blinking blue LED's on the side. In a dark room they are a bit irritating. Maybe there's a way to turn them off?
Oh, and I decided on this router over the next wndr3700 because we don't need a gigabit wired network in the house. So far as I could tell, that was the only difference and I couldn't see paying $70 more for something we wouldn't use. I don't even think our computers have gigabit ethernet on the built-in network cards.

Cisco-Linksys USB Ethernet Adapter Review

I purchased this product in order to connect my Tivo (Series 2) to my internet router and bypass my home telephone connection. It has worked perfectly from day one and I have absolutely no complaints.
Before I purchased this adapter, I was told by a salesperson at Best Buy that I would not be able to connect my Tivo to the internet using this device (or any device like it) because it would almost certainly require drivers to be installed and since the Tivo lacks a CD-ROM, I would not be able to install the drivers. After some research online, I found that there are a handful of adapters like this one that are known to work well with the Tivo devices, even without drivers.
I was still hesitant when I received my adapter because I expected the drivers to be an issue. It was not. My Tivo recognized the adapter and connected right away. It couldn't have been easier.
For someone who is looking for a similar product to connect their Series 2 Tivo to the internet, I would caution that the drivers may indeed be an issue on inferior adapters, but this specific adapter has worked wonderfully for me.

Cisco-Linksys WRT120N Wireless-N Home Router - IEEE 802.3u, 802.11g, 802.11b, Draft 802.11n, 3 Month Warranty, REFURBISHED Review

I used to get my wireless signal through an airport card in a very old Mac I own. I connected the Mac to the cable router via Ethernet and then used the Internet sharing option in OSX to beam a wireless signal for all my devices. This was fine for me, but sadly my old Mac died last week. (*cries)
I bought this router to get my wireless network going again. I was attracted to the Valet router, of course, but I didn't think I really needed it (and currently it costs $89). Well, I bought the WRT120N as a cost effective alternative. It took me about 10 minutes at the most to set it up. You just put the disc in the drive and follow all of the directions. My Linux laptops detected and picked network up immediately. My daughter's Nintendo DSi was just as easy to connect. When I am on my desk top I can see exactly who is connected to my network at any time, and I can share the printer with all the computers, as well. The connection is great- I get a lot more speed on my wireless signal than I did using the old Mac method. This is the lower end of the Cisco wireless N router lineup, and it is fantastic, so I can only imagine how amazing the Valet would be.
I would recommend this for anyone who wants to set up a home network with a fairly simple setup, like laptops, game consoles, e-readers, etc. I cannot say how it would work with a complicated home entertainment setup. In fact, I don't think it is meant to handle more than basic home networks. Dont be put off by price or other reviewers who cant set up a network and blame the equipment. This is a great router, and if you can follow instructions you can get your network up and running in just a few minutes.

Linksys E3200 High-Performance Simultaneous Dual-Band Wireless-N Router Review

The Linksys E3200 is, without a doubt, an impressive product. It's one VERY easy to set router that appears to operate reliably and even comes with a couple of notable bells and whistles. However, some of the 'high performance' claims proved to be slightly exaggerated and I wasn't impressed by the quality of user support.
SETUP (5 of 5)
One question most of us ask ourselves before proceeding to set something as intimidating as a new router is 'will I be able to make it work for me?' The good news is that in this case the answer should be 'probably or most likely yes.' For a basic setup, you simply plug in the router, run the Cisco Connect app provided on a CD on a computer equipped with a Wi-Fi adapter and... you are connected.
Cisco Connect is a well-organized app that will help you add devices to the network - and once the router is app and running most devices will add themselves once you provide the password - allow for limited 'guest' access on a separate network, set parental controls, test your Internet connection speed and directly manage your router if you need to split your network for better performance, configure DNS and DHCP, advanced wireless settings, security, manage the attached disk if you have one, set access policies and so forth.
It gets as sophisticated as you need it to be and the good news is that both Cisco Connect and the router's Web interface are are well organized and are backed by a very well written and quite detailed manual. I will post the link to the downloadable PDF as a comment to this review.
My basic setup completed in a couple of minutes and it took a couple of minutes more to register individual devices: laptops, desktops, printers, portable gaming devices, home servers, Internet radio. Anything that has a wired connection (4 10/100/1000 Mpbs ports are available) does not need any setup. The more sophisticated tasks, such as reserving IP addresses for printers and a media hub and 'splitting' the traffic into 2 separately named networks mapping into the router's 2 frequency bands (2.4 MHz and 5 MHz) were equally easy and well covered by the manual.
It's important that Cisco Connect is installed on one of your computers if not on all because the first thing it does when you start it is checking the router's status and attempting to fix whatever problems if it detects any. To get 'the latest' I installed it from Cisco's site and I didn't experience any issues during or after the install completed.
PERFORMANCE AND RANGE (4 of 5)
Depending on your clients, the router can provide as much as 2 x 300 Gbps - this was a major improvement over the 802.11g router it's replacing. This is a lot considering that the best I am getting from my ISP is 15 Mbps downstream and 2 Mbps upstream but today's home networks have a lot of internal traffic if you use NAS devices, media servers or home servers that are set to run backups.
While the router supports 802.11 a/b/g/n the manual warns that best performance can be achieved when all clients support 802.11n and that one single 802.11a client can slow the entire network if present.
In practice I got consistent 150 Mbps on the 5 GHz band while in the same room at about 30 ft. from the router (except for a few minutes each day when the 5 GHz signal drops for no apparent reason - see the posted screenshots). With one floor in-between, 90 Mbps was possible but the 5 GHz band wasn't as reliable or I could get a steady stream of 54 Mbps, sometimes better on the 2.4 GHz band. With 2 floors in between (router in the basement and my computer on the second floor and at the other end of the house, some 70-80 ft. away) the 5 MHz band became practically unusable (I will post some inSSIDer shots) and the 2.4 GHz band would get me 6-24 Mbps, still okay for Web browsing. The computers on the second floor right above the router get a steady 50-70 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band.
I would like to note that, while the router broadcasting on 2 bands does have its advantages the 5 GHz signal works best when you have line of sight to the router or one thin wall/floor in between. It's not as good at passing through walls as the 2.4 GHz signal. It is possible to maximize performance by using a combination of wired plus 2 segregated bands but some testing and good planning is needed.
RELIABILITY (4.5 of 5)
The E3200 has been remarkably stable so far if I don't consider the random signal loss on the 5 GHz frequency on the second floor. It's fair to state that, when the default settings are kept, the router will automatically switch between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and between the available channels on each band to maximize performance and minimize interference. Since I don't have neighbors, I can't say how the router would perform in a more crowded environment.
Due to a number of violent storms, we lost power for seconds at a time several times in the past few days. Whenever that happened, the router came back on its own and I was able to resume work without having to reestablish a VPN connection or the chat session on WebEx with a Cisco support rep.
EXTRA FEATURES (4.5 of 5)
The E3200 is chuck-full of advanced features including strong security and encryption and the ability to optimize it for gaming (not tested yet) and, of course, the most visible being the USB port through which you can share files off an attached disk with control over access level on the local network and over the Internet.
On my features wish list... I wish it was possible to actually control the signal strength because the 5 GHz band is clearly underpowered. Also, while it is possible to remotely reboot the router, it would have been nice if a physical 'off' switch was available.
WARRANTY AND SUPPORT (2 of 5)
There is a 1 year more or less standard limited warranty. The full terms are posted at Cisco's site so I'm not going to go into details. My experience with routers - and this is my 4th or 5th wireless - is that, if they work, they last forever.
The support... I can't say that I had a happy experience. Before I Googled for '5 GHz signal strength' I thought I'd ask a Cisco support person about it over a chat session. I also wanted to ask about the on and off loss of connection over the 5 GHz band. What followed was a long, sterile and at times absurd 58-minute chat session (Cisco did email me the time-stamped transcript) with an offshore person struggling with a script and asking me to perform meaningless activities instead of telling me that 'yes, the 5 GHz signal is weaker'. Eventually she did say that 'yes, the 5 GHz signal is weaker' but only after I asked the question several times. As for the occasional connection drop, I got the standard 'install the latest firmware update' even though she knew that I had the latest firmware version for the router (one of the first things she asked) and she knew that the router was set to automatically download and install firmware updates.
I believe that my chat was part of the initial 90-day live free support that Cisco provides. In addition, of course, there are posted FAQs and discussion boards. Cisco also offers some 'paid' support but they don't say whether it's coming from offshore underpaid workers or from technicians who can actually help solve problems. My view is that the manual is so well written and the quality of the router is so high, not much support should be needed.
MY RATING
The quality of human support and the over-hyping/marketing of the dual band capability (nice to have but not a quantum leap into super-high performance) are dragging down my rating into the 4 star territory. By the way, 4 stars means 'I like it' but not 'I love it'. Fact is, I almost love it because this is a very good product but... not perfect.
This may not be the best n-router out there - Cisco does sell a higher model for a few dollars more - but I suspect it's all the way there at the top. I can't see how you can go wrong with this one.
____________________________________________________
TIME CHECK: 4 MONTHS SINCE INSTALLATION
End of September: 4 months of nearly-flawless operation proved that the E3200 is stable and dependable and its operation comes close to 'zero maintenance'. I haven't rebooted the router in weeks and all is well.

E2000 Advanced Dual-Band Wireless-N Router *Refurbished* Review

With a refurbished product, you know that it has been evaluated and functions to the manufacturer's specifications. With a new version, the likelihood that there are minor flaws to the product's aesthetics is higher, however you may end up with a defective/DOA unit.
The E2000's throughput and performance outpace that of the E3000 (more expensive) and provide most of the same features. Even though this model isn't capable of multicasting 2.4GHz and 5GHz at the same time, isolating the unit to 802.11N clients only and connecting to a Gigabit desktop for network storage is blazingly fast. I have our cable modem plugged into the E2000, several newer "N" devices connected at 2.4GHz wirelessly, one desktop computer via Gigabit Ethernet and an Airport Extreme (b/g capable - looks like a UFO with a port from the E2000 plugged into its WAN port) in G-only mode for the older wireless clients in the house. I wanted to keep our WDS network alive with AirTunes on an Airport Express (b/g version) in our home theater, so I chose another wireless network name for the Airport devices.
Once I figured out that confusing setup, the execution was a breeze. People complain about the functions of this router being split between the Cisco setup CD/program and the root IP's web-based interface, but after the initial selections (router name and a few other items that won't ever need to be changed) with the CD there is really no need to re-run it. The main items unavailable on the web interface are Parental Controls (not an issue in my situation, at least) and Guest Access (in my opinion, not a great idea for home networking).
Bottom line: this product is fast and does what it is supposed to. I don't need a "full-featured" router that does a poor job as a Network Attached Storage device, or access to a USB printer when my multi-function device would be crippled to printing only in that configuration. I wanted a good quality 802.11n-capable router with gigabit ethernet and got exactly what I was looking for...
in a factory-tested device at an unbeatable price!

D-Link DIR-815 Wireless N 300 Dual Band Router Review

If you've used a Wireless N router that doesn't have a separate G receiver, you'll be aware of the throttling that occurs when you're trying to use your uberfast N connection at the same time a G devices is accessing the router. Not ideal for households that have multiple devices of different bands.
I went from a Netgear G series router to this, and it's night and day. File transfer of 9GB via wireless N took 14 minutes - all the while I was able to surf the internet and stream video with zero lag - couldn't even tell I was sending anything other than my HD churning. Range is good, and multiple devices of different frequencies can connect with no bog or lag. Previously it seemed that more than 2 devices connected to my old Netgear would cause a network slowdown.
Tons of features, the QoS and media streaming features are great too if you have a file server that you wirelessly stream video to your TV (which I do) - HD 1080p video is streamed with no lag, and again, no performance hit on web surfing at the same time.
Super happy with this - runs cool as well, has cool power and security options (i.e. you can set it to turn wireless on at a certain time, so it's off all day when your at work) - tons of stuff. Buy it.
Edit: Speed tip - for some reason these are set default (at least on firmware 1.0 which is all that's out when I'm writing this) @ 20Mhz for WMM (Wireless Multimedia)- set this to 20/40Mhz (Auto) and it is bit more snappy. Also for streaming, enable Multicast. If you want to see all the features, Dlink has an emulator setup, just Google DIR-815 Emulator, and you'll find it.
Second edit: Another review mentions he is unable to setup two separate SSID's for a G, and an N network - I have not had this problem, and do indeed have two separate SSID's, so my N's connect to the N's, and my G's connect to my G's. I should also mention this will NOT speed your internet up in anyway - seems to be some confusion about that. I suppose if you had a 20/30Mbps pipe to your house it would make a difference, but that's fairly rare - most residential services are running 6-12Mbps, which G can handle easily. It will increase your wireless networks range, and your internal file transfer speeds by about 10x, and as I've mentioned, doesn't bog when you're doing multiple things on the wireless channel.

Cisco-Linksys Refurbished E3000 High-Performance Wireless-N Router - E3000-RM / E3000RM (REFURBISHED BY LINKSYS / CISCO WITH A 90 DAY WARRANTY) Review

Just bought a refurbished E3000 wireless router. It was pretty impressive - easy to use, easy to configure, and seemed to have great range. Ten minutes later, however, it was giving me the blinking power LED - meaning it was having a major problem.
I spent the next two hours with Cisco Support in India trying to convince them that it didn't matter if I was using AT&T or Verizon for my ISP - their own web site indicated a flashing power LED meant a defective router. They eventually agreed to replace it - a process that will take a couple of weeks.
Usually, when a company has a large enough inventory of refurbished devices to sell them retail, there's a fundamental problem with the hardware. I suggest staying away from the refurbished version - and perhaps even the new product.
