D-Link DWL-3200AP Managed AP PoE AES SNMP 802.11g Plenum Chassis Review

Unit is solid and sturdy and has a bit of a utilitarian look to it. The software that comes with it lets you manage multiples of these devices at a time at a layer 2 level, meaning even if you don't know what it's IP address it, it'll find it and you can set it.
I had never setup WPA enterprise before, so it took a little bit of googling and trial and error, but I did get this going.
Device seems "faster" than the Linksys WAP54G we have been using.
I will be getting additional units to replace all the SOHO Linksys & Dell APs we've got in our organization all currently running WEP...

SMC SMCWGBR14-N Barricade N ProMax Draft 11n Wireless Gigabit Broadband Router Review

I'm a Network Engineer and I have a habit of over doing it with my home equipment. I was limping along with my old Linksys router. The Barney of home networking equipment. My Vista laptop did not get along well with it at all. Refusing to upgrade convinced that N was just a stepping stone and the moment I bought a new router they'd release a new better product that actually lived up to the hype. However I was to the point that I would only use the internet if I was wired in. I did a lot of research and I finally chose the SMC Barricade Router. I installed the Barricade yesterday and I was shocked at how many features this router really came with in the Admin console. And my wifi connection is fast, 100% reliable and my laptop hasn't kicked me off of the internet since the moment I turned the router on. Signal...100% excilenta all of the time. Buy it, you'll love it. Stay away from Linksys you deserve better. The only thing that could make me happier with the Barricade is if the built in Gigabit switch had more than 4 ports. I have a few ethernet network storage drives and I'd like to have some extra slots for other devices. But 4 is standard with wifi routers. Thank you SMC for fixing my relationship with Wifi. It has really lived up to the good reviews. Check out Cnet.com for a good run down on it's features.

Cisco SR2024T 24 port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch Review

I recently upgraded my home network from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps ethernet. My network is rather large and has a large number of AV devices on it as well as computers, servers, and several video game consoles. I use Crestron throughout my house to control A/V, HVAC, and other things which can be network intensive. Prior to installing this switch my installers tried to go with a lower budget option. We had several issues and device lockups. Fortunately, I was able to quickly ascertain that our "low budget" switch was the issue. I ordered this switch from Amazon and swapped it in and have had absolutely NO problems since even under very heavy load. It makes absolutely NO sense to buy a cheap switch unless you do not value your system integrity or your time. I absolutely recommend this product and am very happy with it.

Cisco SLM2008 8-port Gigabit Smart Switch - PD/AC power Review

I bought this switch to replace a failing 10/100 switch at home. So far, it's been a great product (in use for just about a month) though I haven't yet had a need to use the QOS or MAC restrictive features. But it's a fantastic gigabit switch!
UPDATE 11-12-2008: My switch failed just over a year later. At first, my computer's network card kept getting disconnected and I'd have to reboot the switch. After a while, it stopped letting my pc connect at all. I rerouted my network cable from the pc to another switch and it hasn't gotten disconnected since. I think the other reviewers may be right that it eventually overheated and failed. Going to contact Linksys for a replacement.
UPDATE 01-18-2009: I did contact Linksys on getting this item replaced. After the usual round of explaining the problem to tech support and having them make me try everything I had already tried again, they authorized an RMA. The RMA process took about 2-2.5 weeks. I did the basic RMA where I shipped the defective product to them, they get it, test it, and send a replacement if broken, instead of cross-shipping or having them charge me for a replacement until they receive the defective unit. When I received the replacement, I put it back in place on my network and so far so good. I think it's a good product, but now I'll have to see if this one fails around the same timeframe or not.

Cisco-Linksys WRT310N Wireless-N Gigabit Router Review

I might be a day late and a dollar short but as long as you stand the product up on it's side, there is no heat issue. If you either wall mount or mimic a wall mount by standing it on the side with the ports facing up you won't have a heat issue at all. If you lay it flat, you will have heat issues. I tried it standing up with the ports face down but it got hot. The vents for the heat to escape are on the side with the ports so if you face that side up then there is no heat issues.

Cisco RVS4000 4-port Gigabit Security Router - VPN Review

I purchased the RVS4000 primarily due to its gigabit WAN port; very few wired firewalls have a gigabit WAN port. Not having a gigabit WAN port is a reasonable design because WAN ports in many SOHO firewall applications will likely connect to T1 (1.5 Mbps) or T3 lines (45 Mbps) at most. Since these data rates are lower than that of an ordinary 100 Mbps ethernet port, a gigabit WAN port is more than what is required of a WAN interface.
However, I wanted to use a firewall/router on the network inside of my primary NAT/SPI firewall which is primarily a gigabit network. So, a gigabit WAN port was an important feature because it needs to connect to a gigabit switch (not a WAN link).
Before my purchase, I read many customer reviews that complained about slow data rates through the WAN port. These reviews were very discouraging since the Linksys had a gigabit WAN interface. This was until I found a benchmark test that explained the negative reviews. The RVS4000 (primarily due to its industrial-grade security features) has a WAN to LAN data rate of 15.9 Mbps; very slow for a gigabit interface. However, this can be improved upon by configuring (turning off) the security features of the firewall. Unless you configure the firewall as a non-gateway device, don't expect orders of magnitude improvement in speed.
Here's the good news. The benchmark clocked the RVS4000 LAN to WAN data rate at 530 Mbps. Since many disk drive interfaces do not have a sustained data rate this high; you will not see this number when transfering files. I have a couple NAS RAID boxes with gigabit interfaces that top out at around 100-150 Mbps (individually). I can get higher network utilization numbers when doing several files transfers between different network endpoints simultaneously. Network file transfers tend to be very CPU intensive, even when using SCSI hard drives. The CPU intensive part comes from having to package up the data into IP packets and managing the data transfer.
The bottom line is that I am very satisfied with this firewall and its gigabit WAN port. But understand that it needs to be configured properly to optimize its performance and functionality. You don't need to be an engineer or rocket scientist to do this; however, you will need a bit of understanding about IP networking. If you use the RVS4000 as a primary firewall (configuring all of its security features), I suspect it will do that job rather well also.

Cisco RVS4000 4-port Gigabit Security Router - VPN Overview

As broadband speeds increase most 10/100 gateways do not have the power to support those higher data rates, and thus become the bottleneck in the network. The RVS4000 10/100/1000 4-Port VPN Router works at Gigabit speeds to meet the demands of todays networks. It features Linksys proven SPI Firewall with an integrated Intrusion Detection and Prevent System (IDS/IPS). Its built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100/1000 Ethernet switch can connect up four PCs directly, or additional hubs and switches. The QoS features provide consistent voice and video quality throughout your business. In addition the RVS4000 features a Virtual Private Network (VPN) security engine that creates encrypted IPSec tunnels through the Internet. The IPSec VPN tunnels enable remote users from at home, or on the road to easily, and securely connect to the office network through a typical wired or wireless broadband connection. When used with another RVS4000 or other Linksys VPN router, branch-to-branch connections can be established allowing users in a remote office to connect to the corporate network.

Cisco-Linksys SRW208 8-port 10/100 Ethernet Switch - WebView Review

This switch works unmanaged, but if you wanted an unmanaged switch you could pay less. The web interface only works with IE and not with other browsers. Even in IE it is buggy and either doesn't work or sometimes doesn't even load properly. The only saving grace is the lcli interface. You can telnet to the switch and breakout of the console into the lcli. Which will give you an IOS-like Cisco command interface, but it is very limited and some features are not implemented.
Hard to believe this product made it through testing and to market. And definitely expected more from Cisco/Linksys.

Cisco SD2008 8-port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch Review

Signifiant changes have occurred over the life of this switch. Version 1 had an internal fan and was quite noisy, albeit cool running. Version 2 & 2.1 eliminated the fan. However capacitor C251, sitting next to an internal heatsink is prone to failure after 6 - 8 months, resulting in dropped packets and link connections. Version 3.0 has solved this problem with a complete re-layout of the printed circuit board (PCB), with a redesign of the power/voltage regulation. The new version, still fanless, runs MUCH cooler than version 2.1.

D-Link Xtreme N DIR-655 Gigabit Router Review

The web interface for this router isn't all that great, and it's incompatible with dd-wrt and openwrt. However, the performance is solid, as I haven't yet ever had to reset this router. It happens to support all of the things I've needed to do with it, so hacking the firmware hasn't been necessary, anyway.

Plugable USB 2.0 to 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN Network Adapter (ASIX AX88178 Chipset) Review

This device worked out of the box. Windows Vista recognized it automatically without using the install CD. Less than 30 days later the device quit working. Vista no longer recognizes the USB device. Initially I couldn't contact Plugable via their website as they were having hosting issues. Plugable made contact with me via email and sent me a replacement adapter, without waiting for the defective adapter to be returned. The replacement device is working properly. I definitely would buy another product from Plugable based on my positive experience with the replacement.

Linksys SE2500 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch Review

I don't really get into configuring these things. I just wanted it to work and it did so right out of the box. I just plugged in the power and the ethernet cables without any additional thinking. It appears to know which cable is the uplink and takes care of everything automatically. My only complaint is that the activity status lights are on the back where the cables are. Having the blinking lights on the front would deliver more value to the user.

Linksys SE2500 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch Overview

The Linksys E1500 combines fast speed (up to 300 Mbps), extended range, and amplified signal strength to offer enhanced performance for everyday wireless activities. A MIMO antenna array provides expanded range for your wireless network, and SpeedBoost technology increases signal strength across greater distances for maximum wireless coverage and in-home mobility. WPA/WPA2 encryption and SPI firewall help keep your network protected. D-Link DGL-4100 4-Port GamerLounge Broadband Gigabit Gaming Router Review

This router hands down is a solid performer that beckons to be on radar. Configurability, performance, stability, firmware updates, D-Link has made a huge statement in a world of cheap routers that freezes, frustrates, and basically ridicules users that demand more out of their internet connection. Not sure if my Cisco CCIE VoIP certification makes any difference to this review but I can honestly say with what I do both at work and at home, I expect network device to perform to their specification and more. I also play hardcore online MMORPG with 5 accounts running through this router, no lag, no hiccups, performs like a star. A Router's first priority is stability, this thing is so solid, I wonder if there is something wrong with it. Without stability, nothing matters. With stability non-issue, next comes performance. When I prioritize my MMORPG traffic to 1 (highest priority possible), regardless of how many Torrent traffic in the background, or the 10 or so desktop/laptops that running in my home, this BEAST can take it. Functionality? I bought the LAN only version, no wireless, and I hook up my old Linksys Wireless-B router, disable DHCP, and this D-Link automatically detects, AUTOMATICALLY re-routes its network path internally, and can broadcast wireless network as an extension. READ: ease of use. Other functionality includes being able to lock down every MAC address easily, and assign easy to understand NICK NAMES to every individual laptops/desktops MAC Address with great organization and quick lookup for network troubleshooting. I like the ease of setting up Static IP assignments for key Gaming PC/Laptops that can be easily tracked, monitored, and configured for QoS applications. Though not as robust as professional software but I am able to track all TCP connections with their corresponding ports all in one convenient page. I am able to see if my little brother is downloading/uploading porn and shut it down if I pleases. Last but not least, the last update allows the router to update ANY/ALL changes WITHOUT requiring the router to REBOOT. THAT shot my rating up to the stars.

TRENDnet GREENnet 300 Mbps Concurrent Dual Band Wireless N Gigabit Router TEW-673GRU (Black) Review

I get suddenlink 10 MB down/sec:1 MB up/sec cable internet service
Speed: With this router I get about 10.1-10.4 MB/sec downspeed and 1.03 upspeed via [...] via BOTH wan and wireless! With the cisco e3000 I would get about 8.5-9.7 MB/sec downspeed and similar upspeeds.
Set-Up: The Cisco set-up is pretty idiot proof, but the interface for advanced settings is lacking. With the Trendnet, while not as easy to set-up, it's pretty intuitive if you just follow the instruction booklet.
Range: Have yet to carry my laptop outside and really test it out, but I get "excellent" signal on my crappy lenovo x60 with Class G wireless.
Wired Printer set-up: Once you install the driver from the included CD printing to my usb-linked-to-router printer was very painless and easy. Cisco e3000 only supports wireless printers (so if you're like me and don't have a state-of-the-art wifi printer you're sol for network printing with the e3000).
LCD monitor: e3000 doesn't have one... but... on my model it kinda sucks. If I try to change any settings via the web-interface or install new devices onto the wireless network the picture on the screen scrambles. I just downloaded the newest firmware and it still has this problem. Hopefully future firmware updates fix this because otherwise, the 673GRU is phenomenal.
Network shared storage: I attached a 2gb usb jumpstick to the router (note the 673gru has 2 usb ports, e3000 only has 1) and it was easy to access via the network software. I really wish it would just appear as a removable drive under "My Computer" like a native usb port, but I'm happy with the performance. The e3000 didn't even recognize my jumpstick - in fact, on the e3000 you had to go through this annoying step of creating shared folders (ugh...).
I bought this router knowing I'll be getting a sweet Class N Dual band capable laptop within the next few months, in the meantime, I'm very happy with this purchase!
*Note to TrendNet* This is a 5 star router if you can fix the screen scrambling with a firmware update.

Using an set of these in our intnernal server room, they work great thus far. For us, it comes down to longevity, well see how long this pieces last. Would be great if the full 10/100/1000 version of this switch was more affordable.

Cisco SRW2016 16-port Gigabit Switch - WebView Review

I'm using several of these at our office and one at home. No complaints with performance, the web management UI works (We've set up spanning tree on a few), the rack mount form factor is convenient enough, but the fans on these are noisy. The one at home is under the stairs in our unfinished basement, and I can hear it clearly around the basement and sometimes even in the room at the top of the stairs.

Cisco-Linksys EG005W Gigabit 5-Port Workgroup Switch Review

Amazon is NOT shipping the pictured item - they are shipping the EG005W-V3, which is not only a totally different form factor - it has fewer features (led indicates connection only).
On the plus side, This one has no fan so is totally quiet - on the minus side, the V3 version is cheaper and that lower price is NOT reflected here!!

Cisco-Linksys EG005W Gigabit 5-Port Workgroup Switch Overview

If you need an affordable, versatile way to make lightning fast local network connections, the Linksys EG005W Gigabit 5-Port Workgroup Switch is the answer. Get blistering speeds of up to 2000 Mbps with this wired switch, which allows heavy users of multimedia, graphics, video, and other bandwidth-hungry applications to share and transfer large files with ease. Plus, thanks to the technology built into the EG005W you can mix clients that support slower, 100 Mbps speeds with those that run at full gigabit speeds -- without any speed loss. Simply put, the EG005W is the perfect solution for your desktop gigabit and 10/100 networking needs.
With workstations that support Gigabit Ethernet networking, you'll see amazing speed increases over 10/100 Mbps networks. Connect your clients to the full-duplex ports and see your data traffic efficiency improve several times over. Dedicated bandwidth of up to 2000 Mbps can be attained with the EG005W, making it perfect for graphics, multimedia, and other applications that have to move large files across the network quickly.
A full array of LED indicators are provided on the front of the EG005W, giving you detailed information about the status and performance of the switch:
Power: The power LED lights up when the switch is powered on.
Link/Act: The Link/Act LED blinks when data is being sent or received through the port. When the LED is off, there is no data being transferred through the port.
Speed: The speed LED blinks when that port is transmitting at 1000 Mbps. If the LED is not lit, the port is transmitting at 10 or 100 Mbps.
FDX: If the FDX (Full Duplex/Collision) LED is lit up continuously, the connection made through the corresponding port is running in full duplex mode. If the LED is blinking, the port is experiencing data collisions. Infrequent collisions are normal. If this LED is blinking often, there may be a problem with your connection.
Amazing versatility is built into the EG005W. Simply install this switch in place of your current workgroup hub or switch, and you can network your high-requirement workstations with Gigabit Ethernet speeds, while continuing to service other clients at their current speeds. Or build your network from the ground up, and choose the link speeds that are right for each of the users on your network.
The EG005W is designed to integrate easily with your existing network and you can connect your existing 10/100 Ethernet network to your gigabit server backbone without any additional equipment. All ports on the EG005W are auto-negotiating, and they have automatic MDI/MDI-X crossover detection. This means that you no longer have to fuss with which type of cables you're using, as crossover and regular networking cables are automatically detected. Other advanced features include address learning and aging, as well as 802.3x flow control. Plus, head-of-line blocking prevention keeps your high-speed clients from bogging down in lower-speed traffic.

Netgear RT311 DSL/Cable Internet Gateway Router Review

The RT311 is a simple, easy-to-install solution for sharing a broadband Internet connection for small office / home office (SOHO) users. It's about as close to plug and play as you're likely to get.
Most situations can be covered with the Windows-based installation tool. You'll need all the pertinent info from your provider (IP address, gateway address, DNS address, netmask, etc.), but with this in-hand, the graphical installer makes it easy.
More advanced needs, and people who frequently play online multi-user games, will need more expertise to use the RT311. Advanced configurations can only be made by telnetting to the box itself, or by connecting a serial cable and using a terminal program. This won't be an easy task for average users, and while the manual is well-written and thorough, it can't (and doesn't) train newbies on the basics; some level of skill is assumed.
Its "firewall" security is centered around NAT (network address translation), which does afford some level of security for your network. (It's also what makes connection sharing work.) In short, private IP addresses are assigned to PCs on your network, and the RT311 remaps connections to a single public IP address assigned by your provider. In this way, your PC is not directly accessible from the outside world, since by default, unsolicited incoming TCP/IP connections are denied access to the network. That's fine, but for real security, look to a SonicWall or something more advanced. The RT311 won't likely do much for certain types of hacker attacks, like Denial of Service (DoS), "ping of death," IP spoofing, and the like, which some more sophisticated solutions do address.
NAT also causes problems for some applications. For example, IRC will be tough to use, because most IRC servers require IDENT, and IDENT requests won't pass through the device to your desktop. Dialpad.com, Napster uploads to other users, and a variety of other applications will not work in the RT311's default configuration. You'll need to configure "SUA" for this (i.e., port remapping), but again, that requires telnet or a terminal program, and non-technical users will likely find this a challenge (at least at first).
In addition, your port remapping capabilities are limited. You have your choice of remapping everything to a particular machine on the network (not a good idea, and defeats all firewall security, so use it temporarily and sparingly), or mapping selected ports by number. But you can configure a maximum of only six (6) of those, which may not be enough for power users or networks with many users and applications. (The D-Link and Linksys solutions that compete with the RT311 offer just slightly more flexibility here.)
Using a hardware solution like the RT311 is, in my experience, far better and more reliable than software-based solutions like WinProxy. (But of course, WinProxy offers web caching, content filtering, and other features that the RT311 and its competitors do not. But I favor the reliability of a dedicated piece of hardware to loading down my PC with yet another task.)
Otherwise, the unit does as advertised. It's economical, well supported, well warranted, and well built. Its manual, which is supplied electronically, is as good as they come. And most everything you'll need is in the box (including the basic required cables).
One final note: Be aware that this is a real, Ethernet-based solution. You'll need a 10-Base-T or 100-Base-T local area network (LAN), including hubs or switches as needed, and your DSL or cable modem will also need 10-Base-T Ethernet for hook-up. (This box is not really the right choice for sharing dial-up or ISDN connections.)

Netgear RT311 DSL/Cable Internet Gateway Router Overview

Netgear's RT311 Internet access gateway router allows up to 32 users secure admission to the Internet from a single ISP (Internet service provider) account. It works in conjunction with DSL or cable modems for high-speed Internet access.
Compatible with 10/100 Mbps networks, the Netgear RT311 establishes a firewall that prevents hackers and unauthorized users from interfering in your business. NAT protocols hide the local IP addresses from outside Internet users. Port forwarding and customizable filters allow only authorized users to gain access to your site and files.
The Netgear RT311 is compatible with Internet conferencing, RealAudio, RealVideo, and most chat programs. FirstGear, a Windows-based configuration tool, enables simple installation. All the necessary cables are included, as is a setup guide.
Netgear provides a five-year warranty on parts and labor.

TRENDnet 300 Mbps Wireless N Gigabit Router TEW-639GR (Black) Review

I've spent the last few months dealing with a horrible wireless n router so I decided to go with this one. I also have a TREDNnet wireless n gaming adapter and it's been fantastic so far. Anyways, this router runs cool even though I've been using multiple connections at the same time and using tons of traffic. My PC shows that I average 250Mbps and I see it peak at 300 constantly so the speed is as advertised. I have it running in mixed mode. It only took about 10 minutes to set the router up out of the box. Once I plugged in my cable modem and my pc it automatically configured the connection and I just had to log in and configure the wireless portion and security. In the 10 minutes I also configured my DDNS and my wireless IP Cameras to work with the router. It's a super easy interface.....pretty much the same as any other router you can buy. When saving settings the reboot only took a few seconds and always went back into the setup. Most routers clunk out and you have to reset and log back in manually. I could go on and on but to keep this short I'd have to say that this router is awesome and it does EXACTLY as advertised. I've used most of the major brands of routers and I can't say much for most. It's very difficult to find a good reliable product but I think I've gotten lucky with this one. Don't believe hype or buy something because you've heard the name before. The only other router I've ever been happy with was a Viewsonic believe it or not. That thing was rock solid and never gave me a single problem. If anything changes I will post it....otherwise you can count on this router. I love how people here are claiming they have advanced knowledge but can't set this router up. It's really very very simple just follow the quick setup in the manual.
*UPDATE 1/17/10*
Still no reset needed! I've been using tons of data with multiple devices. As a matter of fact Netflix is streaming to my living room right now. I have a torrent downloading on this pc @ 500kB/s and there are no hiccups. Just solid lightning fast connections!
*UPDATE 3/14/10*
Still no reset needed. I'm running in Mixed Mode and you MUST run 20/40 on the Bandwidth to get full speed. That must be the problem with others but this is standard with any N router.
