NETGEAR FA311 10/100Mbps PCI Ethernet Interface Card Review

To keep my small business network running, I've always tried to reduce costs where possible. Unfortunately, when it comes to network cards, using the lowest possible priced Ethernet card can be false economy.
The Netgear FA311 is one of the only cards I've come across where oddball compatibility issues don't arise. With others, there's always an issue or two, however minor they may be. A D-Link card that prevents a home automation package from working. A Linksys card that conflicts with an online streaming video technology. I could go on. The Netgear costs just a few dollars more than these others, but is still well under the price of brands such as 3Com in most cases.
For me, on all the machines I've tried, the FA311 installs quickly and easily, and works marvelously.
I have only one caution: Windows 2000 users should download and have ready the latest drivers from the Netgear web site. Across two FA311 purchases, the drivers delivered on the packaged floppy had various problems (e.g., major packet loss). I'm used to doing that as a matter of course for the majority of driver-dependent computer goodies, so I didn't find it to be a hassle in this case.

NETGEAR FA311 10/100Mbps PCI Ethernet Interface Card Overview

Netgear's FA311 Ethernet network card connects your PC to other networked computers, printers, Zip drives, routers, network storage, and the Internet. Providing high-speed data transfer, the FA311 provides 10/100 Mbps auto-sensing capability, eliminating the need for manual switching. Compatible with all major PC operating systems, the FA311 ensures your readiness for the future, providing both 5-volt and 3.3-volt PCI capability. Three LEDs on the front panel for 100 Mbps, 10 Mbps, and activity offer intuitive feedback on network status and performance.
Getting started is simple: open your PC, plug in the card, start your PC, and install the driver from the floppy diskette. The FA311 Ethernet network card comes with a limited lifetime warranty.

D-Link DWL-G520 Wireless PCI Adapter, 802.11g, 108Mbps Review

Usually you should discount reviews complaining about problems with a computer add-on: they say more about the reviewer and their systems, perhaps, then they do about the product you are trying to evaluate. I think, though, that some aspects of my experience might be generalizable, maybe even applicable to your situation.
I have been a satisfied user of D-Link wireless products for over three years now. I upgraded to the 802.11g products (WAP and PCI cards) a year ago to a run a network of up to five computers, usually three Win XP or Win 2000 workstations and two notebooks. As I look around my office, though, I see boxes full of failed or problematic routers, WAPs, and cards. It seems, although I have only just realized the extent of it, that these D-Link products all fail with remarkable regularity. In the past, I have just routinely replaced them: that's how much I have liked their ease of use and their performance.
Well, that's over with my latest purchase: the DWL-G520 adapter (my second). It taught me two disturbing things about D-Link wireless. First, the adapter can really screw up your system. This one's driver (regardless of the update version) consumes 90+ percent of a very high-powered CPU. (Windows XP Home, all the latest updates, etc.) It has brought an essential machine to its knees by hugely slowing down everything it does. Disabling the adapter (which solves the problem, at the price of disconnecting me from the world) brings on the fabled Blue Screen of Death. The second disturbing thing is that D-Link support simply has not responded to e-mail messages, period. Their Web site lies when it promises 36 hour response. I can cope--I have a strong background in computing and can devise temporary workarounds--but I shudder to think how uncomfortable this behavior would make most people feel.
Those are the proverbial three strikes: consistently short times to failure, occurrence of really bad driver behavior, and hopelessly bad support. My relationship with D-Link is over; I will have to try some other vendor's offering. If you don't mind the risk of having a similar experience, and think you can cope with absolutely no support, then by all means consider this product. I hope and trust, though, that you (and I) can do better with a different vendor.

Belkin Gigabit Ethernet ExpressCard with 1 External Port ( F5U250 ) Review

This is the second gigabit expresscard I've tried on my laptop. The first, a Linksys Expresscard Gigabit Eth Adapter Pci Express, has a spring-loaded RJ-45 jack that folds down to allow for easier storage, but doesn't protect the pins well and they eventually broke. That Linksys card was not very fast; I never really got gigabit speeds with it. This Belkin card is significantly faster, and was detected by Ubuntu Linux (7.04, Feisty Fawn) right away, nothing to load or configure. I would buy one of these again in a heartbeat. This Belkin card is not as cool-looking as the Linksys, but it has it where it counts, and that's speed.

D-Link DWL-650 Wireless Cardbus Adapter, 802.11b, 11Mbps Review

If all you want to do is use your laptop on the front porch, or in an unwired office at work, this adapter may be fine. But if you were lured into wireless by the promise of high speed internet access in airports, hotels, coffee shops and such, it is virtually worthless. To connect to a network, the DWL-650 must be specifically configured to have the same SSID (identifying name) as the network. That is fine if you only connect to one network and you know its SSID. It is a nuisance if you want to connect to several networks and have to reconfigure each time. It is fatal, however, if you want to connect to a strange network and do not know the SSID. Networks that are intended to be open to the public use "broadcast SSID" to send the network ID over the airwaves. Adapters that can receive broadcast SSID can then automatically configure themselves to log on. The DWL-650 cannot do that, and there are plenty of other comparably priced adapters that can.

D-Link DWL-650 Wireless Cardbus Adapter, 802.11b, 11Mbps Overview

A notebook computer is all about portability, so why should your network cable keep you tethered to one place? The D-Link DWL-650 PC card Type-II 11 Mbps 802.11b wireless LAN adapter, known as the D-Link Air for short, gives you back your mobility, letting you connect to your home or office wireless network from whichever desk (or couch) you happen to be at. Plus, as wireless networks continue spreading to hotels, airports, and even coffee shops, it will help you keep connected no matter how far you travel.
The DWL-650 installed easily, as a PCMCIA card should. We just ran the setup program from the included CD and plugged the card into an empty Type-II slot on our notebook PC. Windows XP immediately recognized the card and installed the drivers. Then, using the D-Link configuration utility, we configured it for our specific LAN. Once connected to the LAN, the little green LED on the end of the card stopped blinking, telling us we were good to go. The printed manual and online help gave helpful guidance on getting the card installed and connecting to our network.
As we tested our wireless setup, we reveled in the freedom the D-Link Air gave us. Using it in a two-story house, we were able to go from room to room, never losing our Internet connection. We even could go outside on the patio and browse the Web from a chaise lounge. Of course, the card worked equally well in an office environment, letting us take our notebook from the conference room to the lunchroom without losing our network connection.
In general, we found that the construction of the walls between the wireless card and the access point had as much to do with reception quality as did distance. So, for instance, if you're separated from the access point by several thick walls, reception will be much poorer than if a glass partition is all that separates you. The manufacturer suggests a range of up to 328 feet indoors and up to 984 feet outdoors, and we found that to be a decent approximation of the maximum range you can expect. The D-Link control utility has a graphical status bar that shows the wireless signal strength, so it's easy to know when you've wandered too far.
At 11 Mbps, the speed's plenty fast for most uses, like browsing the Web, accessing a file server, updating a database, etc. You can also configure it to transmit at slower speeds, depending on your network environment. The card supports both 64-bit and 128-bit WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) encryption, a vital feature that keeps your communications secret.
The D-Link Air will keep you well-connected whether at work, at home, or through a public WiFi (wireless fidelity) network at places like an airport or coffee shop. Since it's a PCMCIA card, it's easy to swap in and out if you need to use a wired connection in some places and wireless in others. Bottom line, if you have a notebook PC and have access to wireless capabilities, you'll love the freedom of movement this little card delivers. --Ken Feinstein
Pros:
Easy installation
Uses IEEE 802.11b standard for broad compatibility with wireless networks
Supports 64-bit and 128-bit encryption
Good range
Cons:
Not as fast as a 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet wired connection

NETGEAR WPN311 RangeMax Wireless PCI Adapter Review

I just have to smile at some of the terrible information some people, who havemn't really read the instruction and don't really know what they are doing with this card.
The BIGGEST thing to kmnow about this great card is NOT TO INSTALL IT UNTIL YOU INSTALL THE NETGEAR SOFTWARE ! This is with XP P2 home.
Read the instructions.
Don't mess with the Windows software at all. Remember that Rangemax, like all "Extended G" formats aer proprietary, and thefore, alwayas use the Netgard software.
1. Put the CD in and install software.
2. Do a shutdown.
3. Install the PCI Rangemax Adapter - WPN311.
4. Bring the system back up.
5. The sofware will immediately greet you after XP comes up. Then go through selecting the wireless router to connect to. Make sure the settings are coordinated with the router. Always a goo idea to have some security on it,like encryption, that would have to be initiated from the Router.
6. To maximize the use of the "Rangmax" features of the adaptor card, make sure that you have purchased a Netgear Rangemax router to take advantage of the Rangemax "enhanced G" features.
I have a Netgear RangeMax Wireless Router (WPN824)and it is working great with the Netgear Rangmaz adapters.
7. I am purchasing another adapter, but I can tell you the two I have, are connected to XP SP 2 PCs that are on another floor, at two ends of the room downstairs and they are runing at a solod 108mbs. I have noot have to restart the router or the adapters.
No more cables. I personally am right next to the router and my Cable modem, so I am connected to one of the four ethernet ports, and my connection works smoother and faster than my Linksys Ethernet router I was using before.
No need for signal enhancers, additional anthing.
FOLLOW THE DIRECTION, LITTERALLY AND REMEMBER TO LOAD THE CD AND NETGEAR SOFTWARE FIRST, BEFORE INSTALLING THE PCI CARD.
I learned that the hard way, although it was higlighted in the documentation.

NETGEAR WPN311 RangeMax Wireless PCI Adapter Overview

The NETGEAR WPN311 RangeMax Wireless PCI Adapter makes it easy for you to provide wireless internet access to your desktop computer, letting you surf the web, check email, and chat online without the need for cables. It is up to ten times faster and has up to ten times more coverage than Wireless-G for a speedy network that won't get bogged down when you you stream music and videos or make internet phone calls.
Easy Setup The WG311 is a PCI adapter and requires a PC with a Pentium 300 Mhz-compatible processor or higher with an available PCI slot for installation. It supports Windows Vista and is also compatible with Windows XP, 2000, 98SE, and Me. Setup is as simple as inserting the adapter into a PCI slot and installing the included software. A built-in stub antenna helps you receive as strong a signal as possible for the fastest possible speeds.
Fast and Secure The NETGEAR WPN311 supports the 802.11g protocol standard but is able to provide better performance thanks to Smart MIMO technology that incorporates intelligent internal antennas into the router. The router automatically senses interference from devices such as microwaves and cordless phones, and adjusts accordingly. The upshot is speeds up to 108 Mbps with a longer range and a lack of "dead zones" in your home. The adapter is also backwards compatible with 802.11b networks so you don't have to worry about not getting a connection at specific hotspots; the WPN311 will automatically detect the network and allow you to connect to it at the highest speed possible.
The adapter supports 40/64-bit and 128-bit WEP encryption as well as WPA-PSK for security so you don't have to worry about anyone eavesdropping on your emails or stealing your passwords. The included software makes managing different WEP passwords a breeze as you can set up different profiles for each location you frequent, saving yourself the trouble of having to type in encryption keys each time you connect to a hotspot you've already used.
The NETGEAR WPN311 RangeMax Wireless PCI Adapter is backed by a 1-year warranty.

D-Link DWA-556 Xtreme N PCI Express Desktop Adapter Review

I don't have much to write about this great product except to say that it works 110% to the good, has no obvious faults or problems, achieves close to 300Mb/s speed without tweaking, fiddling around, or special configuration, and overall is not to be feared as a PCI-Express network adapter. I was using its PCI equivalent, the DWA-552 "N" Adapter for almost 2 months with similar success, and was forced to start using the PCI-Express variety because I started using twin EVGA GTX-285 video cards in the PC, and lost the PCI slot in the process. This is an install it, and forget it system, and works 100% seamlessly with any Vista 64-bit system. I've never booted the computer and not had wifi-it just simply works every time, without fail, no questions asked!
There's a green activity light on the back of the device that blinks off, and on whenever the signal is being accessed, which is 100% of the time, so it's blinking a lot but it's not annoying at all. The three "antenna" that stick out the back of the unit are flexible and can point up at a 45-degree angle to acquire the signal better. The adapter is small, only weighs a few grams, certainly less than 4-ounces or so, and takes up very little space in the PCI cavity of the computer, a plus.
I just used the drivers off the original CD ROM, never even bothered with the D-Link web site and the "latest drivers" which I guess should be done at some point, but I'm having zero problems with the adapter so I've been reluctant to test fate and change a thing at this point.
That's about it for my review of this product. It works, it's simple to work with, install, there is no maintenance or trickery needed to get it functioning 100% with a Vista 64-bit system, so I recommend it highly and give it my 5-Stars Seal of Approval: ***** !

NETGEAR WG311T Super-G Wireless PCI Adapter Review

Just installed the WG311T PCI cards on two pc's connecting through my WGT624 and so far everything is great . Good signal and speed on both computers and no dis-connects . Iam pretty happy with my results todate .
But .......
IMPORTANT NOTE ON INSTALL WITH XP AND SP2 !!!
1.)If you use the Netgear application to monitor/manage your Wifi stuff then you MUST disable the "wireless-zero" in the "Adminstative tools" in the control panel for things to work correctly ( start/settings/contrpl panel/administative tools/services/wireless zero ; and put to "DISABLE"
2.)If you use WindowsXP to monitor/manage your Wifi , then you MUST disable the Netgear application (start /run / then TYPE IN: msconfig / then look in "startup"/ then DISABLE or UN-CHECK the line saying "GEAR 311T".
You must do one of the two items Ive listed to make sure your netgear Wifi works /connects properly (to the internet) . Seems you cant NOT use both applications together in anyway . Ive done ALOT of testing on this and this is the ONLY method(s) Ive found to work correctly (and this is not mentioned by Netgear or Microsoft) .
I hope this helps future users of this equipment . =)

NETGEAR WG311T Super-G Wireless PCI Adapter Overview

Wireless networking is constantly evolving, and the need for increasingly faster speeds and greater range is not only sought after, but expected. If better wireless speed and range with consistent wireless connections is what you're looking for, then NETGEAR has you covered with the WG311T Super-G Wireless PCI Adapter. With this handy device you'll have no more dropped connections, and you can kiss dead spots goodbye.
If you love all the new media applications, such as video and music streaming, you know you need a wireless connection that operates at lightning quick speeds to keep things running smooth. These new applications are nearly impossible with the old 802.11b wireless protocol, but they are certainly attainable with increased wireless speeds. The WG311T delivers the speed you desire. At 108 Mbps, it is up to ten times faster than 802.11b, and extends your network coverage up to four times more than standard Wireless-G protocol.
NETGEAR also helps you keep it simple with an easy-to-use, intuitive 32-bit PIC bus interface, and is designed specially for your PC. Just install the WG311T into the notebook PC, and you'll be ready to connect. Plus, you can keep your network private with WEP encryption.
Setup is made quick and easy with the Smart Wizard install software. System requirements include a Pentium III class PC with an available PCI 2.2 compliant slot, 20 MB of free hard drive space, and Microsoft Windows Vista, XP, 2000, 98SE, or Me. Microsoft Vista Beta drivers are available at www.netgear.com/vista.

D-Link DFE-530TX+ 10/100 Fast Ethernet Desktop Adapter Review

I have been using D-Link brand for about 4 years. During the years I have been networking, I have used Intel, 3com briefly, SMC, and Netgear as well. I have read so many negative reviews about Linksys that I won't even bother. Intel cards are excellent, but not real cheap. The cheapest I have found was about..., which isn't bad at all, but if you are looking for an economical network card that isn't loaded with every feature and it doesn't have to start your car, Intel is a little too much. 3com is one of the better brands, but still expensive. The rest are fairly good, but I started using D-Link after my last employer relied on them heavily.
The entire office network of nearly 20 computers was done using D-Link hardware. They used D-Link network cards, switches, and routers for the Novell and Internet connections.
What surprises me is how low cost the hardware is. They are usually the same as other brands, perhaps even a few bucks cheaper at times. I bought an 8 port 10 mbps hub for...., and am considering their 8 port 10/100 switch now. On top of this, for home or small office, the hardware works excellent.
In the 4 years I have used D-Link, I have only ever had 2 bad network cards out of the box. 2 in a row at that. This is out of using dozens upon dozens of their cards. Not a bad ratio really. No company can make hundreds or thousands of a product on an assembly line and have NO faulty items come out.
I have used them under DOS, Windows 95/98, Novell, Lantastic, and Red Hat Linux with no problems. This card is very widely supported. On the downside, I would not use this brand for anything CRITICAL, such as a large business environment with a mission critical server or anything that demands HEAVY use, such as a call center that relies on a central database being accessed by hundreds of users.
This doesn't mean they are junk. Not at all. For mission critical, Intel or 3com is BY FAR better, HOWEVER, if you are networking 2 up to several dozen machines together and it doesn't DEMAND HEAVY use, they are excellent products.
My last employer depended on D-Link and so did the technicans for the support database. It never failed us.
I am only reviewing the product, not the support. I have read some negative reviews about their support, which could be true. I have never called them.
The heaviest I have used their hardware on my end was about 2 years ago for network gaming. About 7 or 8 machines with various network cards (a few had D-Link) were hooked up to a D-Link 8 port 10 mbps hub playing games. We were HAMMERING on the network and the hub had no problems handling the load. An inexpensive... hub at that.
Bottom line: mission critical and heavy demanding use, consider Intel or 3com, which are designed for that, but typical home/office/small business use for dozens of people AT ONCE on the network, D-Link will handle it just fine.
