Cisco SR2024T 24 port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch Review

I recently upgraded my home network from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps ethernet. My network is rather large and has a large number of AV devices on it as well as computers, servers, and several video game consoles. I use Crestron throughout my house to control A/V, HVAC, and other things which can be network intensive. Prior to installing this switch my installers tried to go with a lower budget option. We had several issues and device lockups. Fortunately, I was able to quickly ascertain that our "low budget" switch was the issue. I ordered this switch from Amazon and swapped it in and have had absolutely NO problems since even under very heavy load. It makes absolutely NO sense to buy a cheap switch unless you do not value your system integrity or your time. I absolutely recommend this product and am very happy with it.

Cisco SF 100D-05 5 Port Desktop 10/100 Switch Review

This is the smallest 16-port switch I've found. The back panel is completely filled with 2 rows of 8 network jacks. Power jack is in the middle of one side.
No fancy features, but easy to fit in almost anywhere.
Wall mounting consists of a couple of screws and plastic sleeves for the wall, then slots on the bottom of the switch are hooked over the screw heads.

Cisco-Linksys SRW208 8-port 10/100 Ethernet Switch - WebView Review

This switch works unmanaged, but if you wanted an unmanaged switch you could pay less. The web interface only works with IE and not with other browsers. Even in IE it is buggy and either doesn't work or sometimes doesn't even load properly. The only saving grace is the lcli interface. You can telnet to the switch and breakout of the console into the lcli. Which will give you an IOS-like Cisco command interface, but it is very limited and some features are not implemented.
Hard to believe this product made it through testing and to market. And definitely expected more from Cisco/Linksys.

Linksys SE2500 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch Review

I don't really get into configuring these things. I just wanted it to work and it did so right out of the box. I just plugged in the power and the ethernet cables without any additional thinking. It appears to know which cable is the uplink and takes care of everything automatically. My only complaint is that the activity status lights are on the back where the cables are. Having the blinking lights on the front would deliver more value to the user.

Linksys SE2500 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch Overview

The Linksys E1500 combines fast speed (up to 300 Mbps), extended range, and amplified signal strength to offer enhanced performance for everyday wireless activities. A MIMO antenna array provides expanded range for your wireless network, and SpeedBoost technology increases signal strength across greater distances for maximum wireless coverage and in-home mobility. WPA/WPA2 encryption and SPI firewall help keep your network protected. Plus, included Cisco Connect software gets you set up in three easy steps and offers powerful tools for ongoing management of your network.

Cisco SR2024 24-port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch Review

Check out those dimensions! BIG!. It has a fan too and they haven't taken any lessons from Steve Jobs about making the fan quiet so it better be in an enclosed, insulated space if you are putting this in your home or small office.
Other than that it is great and a real performer (switches at wire speed)
p.s.
I wish I could change my vote to 2 stars.
Although they answered the support line quickly, I was told that the noise of this product is as designed and it really isn't intended for a small office, but rather should live in an already noisy data center where it can just add to the din. I am going to return mine and find another brand that actually wants it's equipment to be used in a small office. Sigh...

Cisco-Linksys EG005W Gigabit 5-Port Workgroup Switch Review

Amazon is NOT shipping the pictured item - they are shipping the EG005W-V3, which is not only a totally different form factor - it has fewer features (led indicates connection only).
On the plus side, This one has no fan so is totally quiet - on the minus side, the V3 version is cheaper and that lower price is NOT reflected here!!

Cisco-Linksys EG005W Gigabit 5-Port Workgroup Switch Overview

If you need an affordable, versatile way to make lightning fast local network connections, the Linksys EG005W Gigabit 5-Port Workgroup Switch is the answer. Get blistering speeds of up to 2000 Mbps with this wired switch, which allows heavy users of multimedia, graphics, video, and other bandwidth-hungry applications to share and transfer large files with ease. Plus, thanks to the technology built into the EG005W you can mix clients that support slower, 100 Mbps speeds with those that run at full gigabit speeds -- without any speed loss. Simply put, the EG005W is the perfect solution for your desktop gigabit and 10/100 networking needs.
With workstations that support Gigabit Ethernet networking, you'll see amazing speed increases over 10/100 Mbps networks. Connect your clients to the full-duplex ports and see your data traffic efficiency improve several times over. Dedicated bandwidth of up to 2000 Mbps can be attained with the EG005W, making it perfect for graphics, multimedia, and other applications that have to move large files across the network quickly.
A full array of LED indicators are provided on the front of the EG005W, giving you detailed information about the status and performance of the switch:
Power: The power LED lights up when the switch is powered on.
Link/Act: The Link/Act LED blinks when data is being sent or received through the port. When the LED is off, there is no data being transferred through the port.
Speed: The speed LED blinks when that port is transmitting at 1000 Mbps. If the LED is not lit, the port is transmitting at 10 or 100 Mbps.
FDX: If the FDX (Full Duplex/Collision) LED is lit up continuously, the connection made through the corresponding port is running in full duplex mode. If the LED is blinking, the port is experiencing data collisions. Infrequent collisions are normal. If this LED is blinking often, there may be a problem with your connection.
Amazing versatility is built into the EG005W. Simply install this switch in place of your current workgroup hub or switch, and you can network your high-requirement workstations with Gigabit Ethernet speeds, while continuing to service other clients at their current speeds. Or build your network from the ground up, and choose the link speeds that are right for each of the users on your network.
The EG005W is designed to integrate easily with your existing network and you can connect your existing 10/100 Ethernet network to your gigabit server backbone without any additional equipment. All ports on the EG005W are auto-negotiating, and they have automatic MDI/MDI-X crossover detection. This means that you no longer have to fuss with which type of cables you're using, as crossover and regular networking cables are automatically detected. Other advanced features include address learning and aging, as well as 802.3x flow control. Plus, head-of-line blocking prevention keeps your high-speed clients from bogging down in lower-speed traffic.

Cisco SD208 8-port 10/100 Switch Review

I had two of these fail in the last week. Both are about a year old. The first one has a couple of ports that stopped working, and the second completely died overnight. They're plugged into UPS's, so power surges didn't cause the problem. I'm really dissapointed!

Cisco SD208 8-port 10/100 Switch Overview

This newly-redesigned Linksys 8-Port 10/100 Switch can significantly increase your network traffics speed. A switch serves the same function as a hub in a network design -- tying your network equipment together. But unlike a simple-minded hub which divides the networks bandwidth among all the attached devices, a switch delivers full network speeds at each port. Installing this cost-effective 8-Port 10/100 Switch can potentially increase your network speed by eight times. It is the perfect way of integrating 10Mbps Ethernet and 100Mbps Fast Ethernet devices, too. All eight ports are auto speed negotiating, and have automatic MDI/MDI-X crossover detection, so you do not have to worry about the cable type.

Cisco SR224G 24-port 10/100 2-port Gigabit Switch + 2 miniGBIC Review

This product works great with the Gigabit Router for Home/Home office. Takes the bottleneck out of the LAN side if you use one of the Gigabit ports to the router.

Cisco SR224G 24-port 10/100 2-port Gigabit Switch + 2 miniGBIC Overview

High-speed 10/100 Switching with integrated Gigabit and fiber expandability. This Linksys rackmount switch delivers non-blocking, wire speed switching for your 10, and 100 megabit network clients, plus multiple options for connecting to your network backbone. Twenty- four 10/100 ports wire up your workstations, while the integrated 10/100/1000BaseTX port connects to the backbone at Gigabit speeds. And the mini GBIC port allows future expansion to alternate transmission media like optical fiber. It features non-blocking, wire-speed switching that forwards packets as fast as your network can deliver them. Also included are Address Learning and Aging to prevent data transfer errors and Data Flow Control to help prevent packet collisions. The switch provides broadcast storm suppression, has hardware MAC and IP address learning, and supports packet filtering and port security. All ports have automatic MDI/MDI-X crossover detection, so you do not have to worry about the cable type. Each port independently and automatically negotiates for best speed and whether to run in half- or full-duplex mode. Wired Home TLNS RJ45 Two Line Network Splitter Pair Review

You can't use this product to split the Internet line to connect two separate devices. What you are looking for is a Router or a Switch. Internet signal is a digital signal with a designated IP (Internet Protocol) address. Each Network device has to have a unique IP address and a DHCP server to releases that IP address. This device only splits the signal. It dose not assign IP addresses or act as a DHCP server.

TRENDnet TE100-S5 5-Port Ethernet Switch (5 x 10/100Mbps Auto-MDIX RJ-45 Ports) Review

I found this product while looking for a way to split the LAN at my job into two. We get one ethernet cord running to our desk and that's it. I was worried that my company would have some kind of block to not allow this to happen (they don't allow streaming video, audio, etc... so they block a lot of things). I found the unit on sell (about half price) and decided it was worth the price to try it. I tried it at home at first and it worked great (I have a router at home, so don't really need this at home, but just wanted to make sure it worked at home so if it didn't at the office, then I'd know it wasn't the device). I unplugged the ethernet from one computer, plugged this in and plugged in two computers. So, basically, there was one ethernet cord going from the router to the TRENDnet box and two computers branched off from there. Worked great - no set up needed, just plug-n-play. So, now for the big test: I took it to work. Worked with no big problems - same plug-n-play. The only thing is that when I plug my computer directly to the work LAN, it says the connection at 1 GBPS, but through this device, it shows up as 100 MBPS. I can't really tell any problems so far with speed - everything is working as normal, but now I have online access on both my work computer and my laptop. So, for me, this device works as advertised and meets my needs.
PS - sorry for my non-technical review, but I'm no tech expert!
PPS - don't forget you'll need an additional ethernet cord to make this connection. I didn't think of it at first, but luckily remembered before I finished my transaction and was able to pick up a cheap 3-footer.

Cisco -Linksys EFAH16W EtherFast 10/100 Auto-Sensing 16-Port W. Hub Review

I've worked as a computer consultant for may years. I migrated over from 3COM to Intel, and finally to Linksys. Why?
I found the 3COM network cards to be difficult to install and configure, both the intel and 3com hub and network cards to be expensive. I've installed over a dozen of these types of Linksys hubs and network cards have always been trouble free and easy installations. I like less work.
The 100BaseT connections work great for file transfer between servers and high use computers. The 10BaseT works great for connecting devices like network printers. And, nothing beats a self-starting network printer on a network.
Be sure to get linksys network cards too. They are cheap and work perfect, and are easy to install.
Note: If you plan to daisy chain many hubs separated by more than ten (10) meters there are issues with configuration that limit speed. This is true of all hubs. For complicated networks, see your local computer consultant.

Cisco -Linksys EFAH16W EtherFast 10/100 Auto-Sensing 16-Port W. Hub Overview

The EtherFast 10/100 Auto-Sensing Hubs from Linksys provide a fast and economical way to build or extend an enterprise 100 Mbps network. This 16-port hub lets you connect computers, workstations, servers, or other nodes together in seconds. Every port of the hub automatically adjusts to either 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps speeds, allowing you to mix 10BaseT and 100BaseTX hardware together any way you like--all on the same hub. Combine low-cost 10 Mbps computers with high-speed Fast Ethernet workstations, and save money by putting 100 Mbps hardware only where you need it most.

NETGEAR GSM7324 24-Port Layer 3 Switch Review

I used to hate network uptime. When the LAN was up for more than a few days at a time, I would get angry and punchy.
That has all changed, friends.
Now that I have the Netgear GSM7324, I don't have to worry about the network being up for too long; it automatically kills the LAN on it's own.
The best part is, it is totally unpredictable, so each time my users yell "Hey, I can't get to wiki" or "Is there something wrong with the Internet?", it's like a special surprise for everybody.
I mean really, do you really _need_ access to your gateway while trying to commit CVS at the end of the day? And who wants to be able to read email while at work? It's much better to pay a bunch of software engineers and marketing consultants to sit idle while the IT guy is power cycling all the switches on the network trying to clear up whatever happy fun issue is taking down LAGs and VLANs one by one.
Sure, I could have bought a Cisco, but that drab bluegreygreen color totally clashes with my server room. Also, there is my hatred of a stable network to consider.
I'm sure if I was just using this switch to do simple layer 2 stuff my LAN would stay up longer, but since I wanted to actually break the network as fast as ARP'ingly possible, I made sure to turn on some of the features Netgear claims this box can support.
I would have given this unit a higher rating, but sometimes my network is up for nearly half a week before it dies. That's nearly two and one half days without my users sitting idle while I troubleshoot, or going home early because they can't get anything done at work.
One last advantage of using this Netgear "layer 3 switch" is their superb support team. I used to have to sit on the phone with other company's support staff, getting answers to my questions, or offers to VPN in to take a look at the situation. Now, I am all smiles as I get the same exact say statement each time I call support.
I don't have to worry anymore about getting help with the problem from a qualified network engineer type.
Could you pass the Dosas?

D-Link DES-1105 5-Port 10/100 Desktop Switch Review

Bought one of these for under $15. I have a powerline Ethernet adapter connected to my router. On the other end of the second powerline adapter (which uses your house electrical wiring), I connected this switch. To the switch, I connected my DirecTV DVR and also an Ethernet to USB adapter to connect to my series 2 TiVo (which only has a USB connection). Everything works perfectly. No configuration needed (obviously, couldn't do it when connecting to non-computer devices). It just works. Both the DirectTV DVR and TiVo DVR work fine, simultaneously!

Cisco-Linksys EFAH08W EtherFast 8-Port 10/100 Auto-Sensing Hub (Desktop) Review

First of all, the current picture of a black hub is mistaken - the box looks like the other current linksys routers / hubs with the bright blue and black plastic box design.
That having been said, this hub worked perfectly out of the box. It is used to network among machines running Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Linux, using a variety of ethernet cards (3Com, Linksys, NetGear). It has been used several weeks now without a problem. Setup took minutes!
Besides this item, I have bought and used several Linksys products before, including several 4-port hubs, a 4-port router, PC network cards and a laptop card. All of these have worked flawlessly with the other network equipment I have used. In some cases they replaced an item that cost 3-6 times more yet did not work as well!
I noticed some other users have had issues with this product, so here are a few pointers about networking that might help:
1) Hubs allow computers to talk to connect to each other on a local network. All a hub does is allow a computer which is set up to be on the network to talk to another computer.
2) To create a local network that can talk to the internet, you either need to buy an IP address for every machine and use a hub, or use a router to allow multiple computers on the internal network to look to anyone on the internet as having a single IP address. (Don't forget the cable/DSL connection & modem.)
3) The maximum speed that the hub supports may be 100 Mbps, but the speed is limited by the speed of the ethernet card as well! Some ethernet cards are only rated for 10Mbps - so that is the maximum connection speed you'll get using them.

Cisco-Linksys EFAH08W EtherFast 8-Port 10/100 Auto-Sensing Hub (Desktop) Overview

The EtherFast 10/100 Auto-Sensing Hubs from Linksys provide a fast and economical way to build or extend an enterprise 100 Mbps network. This eight-port hub lets you connect computers, workstations, servers, or other nodes in seconds.

D-Link 24-Port Rackmountable Gigabit Switch DGS-1024D Review

I just ordered one of these as part of a project to rack up and centralize my home network. Prior to this I had several switches in my basement daisy chained together. With this new D-Link switch I was able to rack this up with some nifty vertical rack arms and in conjunction with a 24 port patch panel and rack cable organizer get everything very nicely organized.
The Amazon description for this switch is out of date. The current version of the product indicates that with the latest power supply it is up to 73% more efficient than similar non green D-link switches. Also worth noting is that the face plate on my unit is a silver color, not the white appearing face plate in the product photos.
I connected this switch on my work bench with a Kill-A-Watt power meter and with nothing else connected this 24 port beast is sipping just 3 watts. With five gigabit devices it is using a miserly 7 watts. Even fully loaded, according to the specs this switch will not use more than about 19 watts. The switch has features that will throttle down power consumption based on device connection speed, cable distance and whether a port is active or not. All of this means that you can build out a very robust home network without leaving something running 24X7 that is consuming a lot of power.
I was close to ordering the competing Netgear product (JGS524) however the Netgear has two fans in it (noisy and prone to failure) where as this D-Link switch is fanless! This is a big deal, as the fan is often the component that will go out over the long term with a product like this... not to mention the noise you will experience if you are anywhere near the device. The Netgear does have a "lifetime" warranty (and better warranty support) where as the D-Link has a 5 year warranty. With no moving parts, and if hooked up to high quality surge suppression the D-Link box should last for a very long time without problems.
Performance with this switch is excellent, I get rocket fast transport between all of my devices. It's worth noting that this is an unmanaged switch so you cannot break your network up into VLANs or do cable diagnostics, etc, with this switch. For its purpose though of providing a super fast home or small office network it is offering a tremendous value. T
Highly recommend it!

Linksys SE1500 5-Port Fast Ethernet Switch Review

This is an inexpensive switch from Linksys. For less than thirty dollars you get a 5-port switch with standard data rate of 10/100 Mbps. It has it's own power supply, power on LED indicator as well as LED indicators for each active port. It's a pretty small, compact size and light weight switch. Nothing special, but nice and small, good value for the price.

Cisco-Linksys EZXS88W EtherFast 10/100 8-Port Workgroup Switch Review

This is a great little box for connecting a small network without breaking your bank.
The EZXS88W has a great work/size ratio. It's small enough to set on top of a computer case and provides eight ports of full duplex, 10/100 networking.
It has a very informative display to give out info for connection speed, duplex connection and collision. The setup is as simple as plugging in the power and network cables. I have yet to run into any problems with this unit and would recommend it without a second thought.

Cisco-Linksys EZXS88W EtherFast 10/100 8-Port Workgroup Switch Overview

Cisco SG 300-10 (SRW2008-K9-NA) 10-Port Gigabit Managed Switch Review

I needed to segment out my network into separate collision domains because I have a TON of LAN traffic. You'd be amazed how much junk gets on a advanced home network if you were to truly investigate your LAN traffic. This switch assumes you know CCNA level switch technologies and routing. If you want plug and play, go away from this model and just buy a un-managed switch. Me on the other hand, I want full management, network segmentation, Quality of Service, Access Control Lists, the whole 9 yards. This switch does not use the standard Cisco IOS set of commands so the GUI and menu driven CLI took some getting use to. Provides great network performance, secure collision domains, remote management is wonderful, SNMP features are fabulous and at a great price for the package. Integrates nicely with a Cisco 881 WAN router and really took a load off it's CPU and memory utilization after installing the Cisco SG100-10.
