StarTech 2-to-1 RJ45 Splitter Cable Adapter - F/M (RJ45SPLITTER) Review

This adapter is designed for office network patch cabling applications. It simply splits the eight pins in standard Cat5 cabling into two RJ45 ports. Since ethernet networking only uses four pins of the available eight in Cat5, this adapter will use the extra four pins for a second network connection. This means you must have TWO of these adapters, one connected at each end of a CAT5 patch, in order to use them correctly.The previous reviewers were obviously victims of the poor and incomplete description given here. The manufacturer's web page (http://www.startech.com/Product/ItemApplications.aspx?productid=RJ45SPLITTER&c=US) gives a more complete description, but some networking knowledge is recommended to properly utilize this.

Cables To Go - 28722 - 15ft High-Speed Internet Modem Cable Review

This is a phone (RJ11) cable. Not an ethernet (RJ45) cable. It eliminates crosstalk and "noise" completely from what I have experianced. Yes this does work for both a DLS modem (connected straight from the wall to the modem with this cable) or even just for your LAN line phone.
I would write more of a review, but considuring I had already written an extensive review for this product already and somehow it deleted itself without my knowledge, this is all I will write for a review.
Shipping 10/10: It arrived one day early if I remember correctly.
Packaging 10/10: Simple, but does the job.
Product 10/10: Perfect for replacing any phone line cord.

HDE RJ45 Ethernet Splitter Review

This device allows you to COMBINE 2 ethernet ports from a switch/hub/router into 1 cable and to SPLIT the cable back out to 2 ports for use with computers or other ethernet devices.
A typical ethernet CAT5 cable has 8 wires in it; and for 10/100 ethernet networks you only use 4 of those 8 wires. Therefore you can use the other unused 4 wires to run another ethernet segment.
In order to use this product properly you have to connect 2 ports from your switch/hub/router. Then a regular CAT5 ethernet cable to wherever you need to go and put ANOTHER one of these on the end to split the signal back out.
Typical use:
PROBLEM: You have 1 ethernet cable connecting to a computer (for example) and you need to add another computer or other device. You do not want to run another ethernet cable.
SOLUTION: Install one of these on both sides of the ethernet cable. 1) At the source of your ethernet network (where your router/switch/hub is); remove the existing ethernet cable; then take two empty ports and plug them into the 2 ports side of this device. Then plug the ethernet cable that you just unplugged into the single port side of this device. 2) At the end where the computer is, remove the ethernet cable from the computer; and plug it into the single port side of this device. Then connect your computer and the additional device to the two port side of this device.
(It does not matter which port of this device you plug your computer/additional device into).
In closing ... You MUST combine 2 ethernet ports from your switch to make this work. I see reviews all the time from people who do not know how this works and they give bad reviews because it won't work for them.

Westell DSL Modem Review

This DSL modem is a piece of junk. Not exactly sure what the problem with this thing is, but it has to be cold booted (unplug it, wait 15 seconds, plug it in again) every morning if I want to retain the through-put I'm paying for.
If you own one of these things you can see for yourself how bad it is by running a speed test at the DSL Reports website before doing a cold boot and after doing a cold boot. In my case the download speed *DOUBLES* after a reboot.

USB to Serial RS-232 DB9 Adapter Cable Review

This adaptor is considerably cheaper than many on the market but works perfectly well. It appears robust and well made as well as simple to use.
I've not used any other adaptors so don't know if this is universally true but the thing that I liked most about this adaptor is how simple they've made the software that ships with the device. There is no fancy front end bloat ware, just a simple set of drivers on a CD.
Although, the installation is easy if you have a small ammount of knowledge about PCs, it wouldn't have hurt to put a note on the box for the benefit of less tech savy users of how to find the instructions. There are no paper instructions with the product but there are instructions hidden on the CD. Open it up in explorer and look in the directory with the same name as the product. The instructions are good and show how to install in straight forward pictures of exactly what to click on.
Using Windows XP, Just insert the CD, plug the adaptor into a USB port and wait for the 'found new hardware' wizard to start. All the settings are standard and your PC will know where to find the drivers. After you've installed it, you may need to know the COM number of your new port. You can open the hardware manager, that's in right-click 'My computer' - properties - Hardware - 'Device Manager'. Look in the 'ports' sub menu and you'll see the new port with it's COM number. Any software that connects to a serial device will need to know the COM number to work. The other way to find out is to just try ports 1,2,3,... untill the software for your PDA or whatever manages to connect. I know that sounds complicated but I've spelled it out in great detail, it's really fairly intuitive.
In short, before you junk that old programmable remote control or PDA because your new laptop doesn't have a serial port, use this, it's cheap and it works.

I'm thinking the people rating this poorly don't understand how to use it. It WON'T split a single Ethernet CONNECTION into two. It WILL enable a single Ethernet CABLE (which has 8 wires) to carry two connections (which require 4 wires each). This is helpful in places where you have a single cable running from your router (typically in a wiring closet) to two devices, and can't easily run a second cable -- i.e., where one cable is already installed in the walls.
Here's how you use it: Run Ethernet cables from 2 ports of your router into the female jacks of the first splitter. Plug the male end of that splitter into the jack in your wiring closet that runs to the part of your house you want. Plug the male end of the second splitter into the Ethernet jack at the other end of that cable run (i.e., in the room where the devices are located). Run Ethernet cables from the female jacks of the second splitter to the devices.
If you want to use a single Ethernet connection for two devices, these splitters won't work; you need a router that shares the connection among the devices.
