I use a Dell D810 Latitude that lost it's serial port. I haven't had the time to disassemble the laptop to repair the serial port so I ordered this adapter. It works on most programming software except older software that will not go to the higher serial port settings like com port 11. Otherwise, it works great and has the added advantage of being a hot swappable port with the USB connection.

This USB-RS232 converter is based on the PL-2303 chipset and is one of the few with true cross-platform support. Other models are lacking drivers for Mac, Linux, Vista, and 64-bit flavors of Windows. If you need something that'll just work no matter what you're running get a USB-RS232 adapter based either on the PL-2303 (like this one) or the FTDI chipsets.
There are other converters out there that provide more reliable data transfer at higher speeds, but this is a great buy for the money and will suffice for just about any task you need it for.

9-Pin DB-9 Serial USB Cable Adapter RS-232 RS232 W/ Driver Review

This item comes with absolutely no instructions for installation. The enclosed CD contained drivers to many products and was equally useless. I only found the correct driver after I called a company whose README file was on the CD who no doubt had many calls from others about the same product. The company had no affiliation with the actual product but they were kind enough to help me identify the item and I was then able to install a driver.
The unit does work properly now that the correct driver is installed but I don't envy the mere mortal that purchases this device. It is ridiculous that there are no instructions. So in an effort to help anyone that has purchased this device (or plans to purchase it) here are the instructions to install the driver.
When the unit is plugged in identifies itself as USB SER! The unit has a barely legible HL-340 molded on the side of the DB9 connector. HL-340 is the part number and with that you can find the driver installation executable (HL-340.exe) for the device under the folder USB-232 on the USB driver mini CD that comes with the device.
Don't expect to tell Windows to search the CD for the device driver - it won't find it because the driver installation is an .exe file that you need to run manually first. Simply run USB-232\HL-340\HL-340.exe first and then plug the device in.
After connecting the device, Windows will prompt you to install the driver. Follow the usual Windows prompts to install the driver software automatically (since the driver software was already installed on the system in the previous step). The driver identifies itself as USB Serial CH340 to add further confusion.
You will get warnings about the driver not having passed Windows Logo testing. You can ignore those warnings and install the driver anyway.
The com port should appear in the com port menus of whatever software that tries to use a com port - in my system it appeared as COM7 and this will probably vary on other systems.
Once the device is installed it works properly so I can't know it from that standpoint. It was just an ordeal to get it working. I hope that this helps someone.

I've bought 3 different usb to serial cables and couldn't get the other two to work with Windows 7 in 64-bit mode, but this one does!!! I am using it to configure cisco and juniper routers. Has a pretty standard Prolific chipset and the driver came on a disc in the box, although its a small disc like most usb accessories so if you have a slot load drive you should download instead...

I should have believed those other reviews that says this Serial Adapter doesn't work on XP, because it doesn't. The driver included on the CD does absolutly nothing, and the adapter simply will not work. Do not buy it if you are running XP.

USB to Serial RS-232 DB9 Adapter Cable Review

This adaptor is considerably cheaper than many on the market but works perfectly well. It appears robust and well made as well as simple to use.
I've not used any other adaptors so don't know if this is universally true but the thing that I liked most about this adaptor is how simple they've made the software that ships with the device. There is no fancy front end bloat ware, just a simple set of drivers on a CD.
Although, the installation is easy if you have a small ammount of knowledge about PCs, it wouldn't have hurt to put a note on the box for the benefit of less tech savy users of how to find the instructions. There are no paper instructions with the product but there are instructions hidden on the CD. Open it up in explorer and look in the directory with the same name as the product. The instructions are good and show how to install in straight forward pictures of exactly what to click on.
Using Windows XP, Just insert the CD, plug the adaptor into a USB port and wait for the 'found new hardware' wizard to start. All the settings are standard and your PC will know where to find the drivers. After you've installed it, you may need to know the COM number of your new port. You can open the hardware manager, that's in right-click 'My computer' - properties - Hardware - 'Device Manager'. Look in the 'ports' sub menu and you'll see the new port with it's COM number. Any software that connects to a serial device will need to know the COM number to work. The other way to find out is to just try ports 1,2,3,... untill the software for your PDA or whatever manages to connect. I know that sounds complicated but I've spelled it out in great detail, it's really fairly intuitive.
In short, before you junk that old programmable remote control or PDA because your new laptop doesn't have a serial port, use this, it's cheap and it works.

I do embedded hardware development, and frequently need RS232 for communication or debug with embedded devices. As PCs typically no longer include serial ports have become vital.
The nature of my work also means the devices I'm communicating with use a variety of baud rates, and are frequently powered up and down, causing spurious receive bits or handshake changes. Older Prolific USB-serial chipsets and especially FTDI chipsets handle such situations incredibly badly, and can easily get in a state where they do not send or receive any more serial traffic until the USB-serial adapter is unplugged and replugged - frustrating and time-consuming. The newer Prolific chipset on this device appears solid, and I've not yet lost serial traffic due to baud changes or power cycles of serial devices.

Some people have had an easy time installing this cable and others couldn't get it to work at all. Why is that?
Whether this cable works or doesn't work with particular drivers depends on the chip used in it. To find this out you have to connect the cable, go to Device Manager, right click on Properties, select the Details tab. Under Properties select Hardware IDs, then read what it says under Values. The cable I bought was USB\VID_058F&PID_9720. If you check the driver downloads from Sabrent they are good for an evidently much later version VID_067B&PID_2303, so the drivers from Sabrent's site won't work with the cable I bought. Since my inclination is to always download the latest drivers I wasted a lot of time on this!
If you have a cable with a later chip in it you may be OK. Or you may be OK with the drivers that come on the included CD. If none of these work you can try searching the net for drivers for the particular chip you have. The responsible thing for Sabrent to have done is to have all legacy drivers available on their web site.
After much wasted time I was finally able to get this cable to work. After a search I found the drivers in the download section at hiti dot com for a CS-320 card printer that uses the same kind of usb to serial controller. However, I was close to giving up so this cable (as many of the reviewers apparently did) so this cable came close to being absolutely useless to me. Installing a cable should be easier than this and for that I fault Sabrent for their lack of communication / transparency and as well for their non-support for older versions of their product. And that's why I gave this only two stars.

Cables Unlimited USB-2920 USB 2.0 to Serial DB9 Adapter (2.5 feet, Black) Review

This is by far the best USB to serial adapter I have used. A few years ago I went through many different adapters. Everything from $5 e-bay adapters to more expensive ones. The others either did not work they way they should, or they died on me after a short period of time.
I just purchased a second one of these to have in my backpack all the time. I use this adapter for everything from administering servers to configuring network equipment.
The disc that comes with this device come with drives for Windows, Linux, and Mac operating systems. I have had not problems using this with both Windows XP Pro and Windows Vista (Ultimate and Business tested). In addition, I was able to get this to work with Ubuntu (with minicom) without any additional drivers.

Not at all happy with this device. The claim "compatible with all serial devices" the reality is it is not . I wanted to connect my LaserWriter to my iMac (serial to USB). After much frustration I called Belkin and was told that this product does not support LaserWriter printers. Belkin was not very helpful and returning the product means I am out the shipping. If you are considering this product call to get specific compatiblity specs.
