Compaq iPAQ 3135 Monochrome Pocket PC Bundle (with Compact Flash Jacket) Review

The Compaq iPAQ 3600 series (specially 3630, 3650 and 3635) are really great units. I use my iPAQ as a replacement for several devices. As I usually have a 1GB IBM Microdrive in the iPAQ it works as the best MP3 Player yet (I have some 700MB of MP3 files continuously available) and still plenty of room in the MD and RAM. I also use a Lucent Orinoco for wireless connection, which allows me to chek my emails wherever I am at my place. The comprehensive software package (Inbox/PocketIE, PocketWord, PocketExcel, etc.) allows gerat functionality out of the box (you can add many shareware/freeware to increase that further (I recommend Resco's Utility PAckage for Zip compression/Decompression, etc.).
For travelling I am about to get a stowaway keyboard which will allow me to conveniently leave my notebook at home and conveniently check emails and eventual webpages.
My iPAQ was one of the very best purchases I made last year. As one of the very few PocketPCs to allow the use of cheap & standard PCMCIA cards such as:
- Any NE2000 compliant Networking Card, which usually costs as little as $20
- Some PCMCIA Modems (including the 3Com Cell Modem, which may be used along with your cell phone or landline)
- Wireless NIC, such as the pretty standard Lucent/Agere Wavelan/Orinoco
- IBM Microdrive up to 1GB (using this CF card with the PCMCIA adapter allows for better battery usage)
- Kingston 2GB PCMCIA drive.
- Much more...
I am anxiously awaiting the time I manage to get a CyNET Inc. CyPAQ (which is a dual PCMCIA slot for the iPAQ, along with their Wireless Cell/Modem, which allows one to use the iPAQ as a cell phone!).
I already got rid of my former MP3 Player and in the future I'll get rid of my Cell Phone too. All will converge into a single unit - my iPAQ!
We recently installed Linux in one iPAQ and using teh very same PCMCIA cards we could run applications such as vic for video streaming, etc. It was quite impressive!
Last but not least I installed a PersonalJava JVM in my iPAQ and I can run any PersonalJava compliant code, such as my own H263 Video Decoder called jStreaming (http://jStreaming.com). That runs smoothly in my iPAQ. I am conficent that if you are thinking about getting this unit you'll not be disapointed. Do think about getting a Microdrive to go along with it tough.

Netgear WGR101 Cable/DSL Wireless Travel Router Review

This is one of those things that I bought, really hoping and wanting to be able to say good things about. I really wanted this to be a good product; but it's just not.
First off, the firmware releases have been quite buggy and while they have added WPA support, I find that it does not work well. I think that if you wanted to use this device without encryption and without changing the DHCP range and not in any sort of 'must-have' environment, maybe it would work. For me, all of those things have caused me more headaches than I care to remember.
I have had a lot of problems with...
-Using WPA with multiple devices connected at once, the signal drops every 60 minutes, like clockwork. To get the signal back, you have to repower the router and restart your wireless card. Very frustating. When I tried to get Netgear's help, they told me to reload the firmware - I did this but to no avail.
-The DNS passthrough resolution stinks. (Sorry if I 'tech out' on you here, but this is an issue some may find valuable to know about.) In many situations, I can not get DNS resolution through the 'gateway', which is of course the WRG101. To resolve I have to go into the router's browser interface, pull of the DNS server IPs that the hotel or ISP issued to the WAN port and manually configure my IP settings in my WinXP Pro machine to use those DNS servers. This works, but what a pain.
At the end of the day, I can't get Netgear to give me anything resembling decent support on this thing and I would say it only works for me 20% of the time without monkeying around with it. I keep trying (and hoping for better firmware)(as of v.1009 it still stinks) but I'm sure that someday this thing will find it's way into a hotel room garbage can - or better yet, out the window.
Look elsewhere if you want encryption and stability - this is a bummer product.

3G/4G MiFi Mobile Hotspot & Wireless Broadband Network Router with USB power supply 802.11n up to 150Mbps and IEEE 802.3az Green Ethernet-Connect to iPhone, HTC for Internet sharing Review

Great 3G router. Smallest high performance wireless router I have ever seen. It can be powered up by mini USB. It has three modes for router, access point, wireless access point. Wireless access point feature is really cool. Basically you can connect this hotspot to any wireless router via WiFi then either extend the wifi or plug a network device to it's ethernet port to turn it into wireless device. Price is unbelievable for all these functions.

New Siig IC-SP0A12-S1 Soundware Travelmate 2.0 Speaker System 20 Khz USB Battery Power Pack Review

I got mine for about $20 at Fry's electronics but they have sound quality of something I would expect for $40-$50 so they retail appropriately if a bit high for someone who doesn't care if the sound is great. These things can get pretty darn loud without losing sound quality. As a trucker I travel a lot and use these with my netbook I travel with, and I must say these speakers are EXTREMELY convenient. They have a magnetic rim or something that lets them clip together face to face so they look like an egg when pressed together, they sound interesting when you play music with them face to face like that! The cords are then removed from both the computer and the speakers themselves and with a little twist-tie you are good to go! They're about the same size as a Iphone or wallet. They don't have a lot of 'bulk' to their weight so they're nice and light.
I haven't dropped mine yet so I can't tell you how strong they are, they're solid so they're fine for small drops off a table but I wouldn't suggest throwing them out of a moving vehicle at freeway speeds.
My only wish is the company didn't make them quite as flat, or made the rims come out a little more. That way you could wrap the cords up nicely and keep them between the speakers as their own box and never have to worry about misplacing them.
I've gone through a lot of these type of small speakers over the past 6 years, and I have to say I'll only buy these from now on whenever I am buying small light duty speakers for whatever reason.
As of right now I am a consistent buyer of Sony MDR-J10 h.ear Headphones, and these SIIG speakers to meet my low budget auditory needs. When I make some good money or companies lend their equipment to me to review I'll be happy to share my thoughts on high end equipment like Bose.

CradlePoint PHS300 Personal Hotspot - Wireless access point - 802.11b/g (Version 2.0/2.5.3) Review

I've done quite a bit of research before I purchased this item. I was well aware of its strength and shortcoming so when I managed to put it to work, nothing surprised me.
The unit is built in hard plastic, pretty sturdy, but I would be careful of not dropping it as a breathable pouch may not be a bad idea. The battery is made in Japan, whereas the unit itself is made in Taiwan. The initial setup is easy. If you're technically challenged, you can go with the default setup which should get you up and running in a few minutes. If you acclaim yourself as a techie, play around the setup menu and you can tap into a lot more features. By default, go to: http://192.168.0.1 from your browser after connecting to the device, it opens up a wealth of menus that you can customize to your own liking
During the setup, I would suggestion doing the followings:
1. Firmware upgrade, the process is easy, but you need to have a working wifi USB to grab the firmware.
2. WPA2 personal is a good security protocol to use, but it does slow down the connection a little bit, but not significant
3. I probably should have put this as item 1 but no big deal. Change the setup password for your protection.
If you screw up the configuration, no worries, just like most of the home routers, you can use a needle to poke a reset button, which is inside the unit, next to the battery compartment, and everything will be reset.
That's about it for the setup part, now let's talk about the design.
Good: relatively compact, light weight, and not too hot after hours of usage. It won't burn your hand or breast if you put it in your shirt pocket. The LED status lights give you good idea of the unit's operation state. Believe it or not, it's pretty useful. The charger is pretty small, takes about 3 hours to charge it full from empty, which is not too bad. Cradle Point claims it should last about three hours, and I found it to be reasonably true, if I only connect one device to it. If you connect more, it will shorten the battery life. The cost of the replacement (or spare) battery is less than $50, which is a bit pricey to me. But I will talk about usage tips later. Wireless broadcast range is quite good, but of course you can't compare it with your home wireless router. Yet, I have never had any trouble connecting with maximum signal with a size of my office, which is about 300 square feet. After all, this is mainly for travel companionship, and you shouldn't be too far away from the unit anyway.
Bad: The thing I hate the most, is the way that you have to plug in your USB device, which is on the side of the unit, right next to the charge port. When plugged in, it sticks out from the unit and it's easy to break in my opinion. If you put it in your jacket or shirt pocket, and if you're not carefully enough, you might bend the USB and destroy the USB port. If CradlePoint is reading this, maybe they should re-design the housing, to have some room side, fitting a wireless USB drive in there. This would protect the drive from accidental damage.
User experience: My goodness, I love this thing. I bought my iPad the first day it came out, and I received this unit the night before I got my iPad. Let me tell you, it makes the iPad so much more fun to use. I can use it anywhere I like. Since it fits any brand of wireless USB, I'm not at the mercy of AT&T's crappy data service. I'm using it with my Verizon 760 wireless modem, and it works like a champ! Since this unit can take on 16 continuous connection, I can use it along with my netbook, or my wife can use it with her iPod touch concurrently. No problem at all!
Tips: If you intend to use the unit for an extended period of time, and you can plug it to a wall jack for powering it up, I would take out the battery, so you won't have to charge the battery continuously. CradlePoint claims that the battery won't have any memory effect, which I seriously doubt, but taking out the battery from the unit takes less than 5 seconds, so why not?
Hope you like my review, and if you do, please rate. Thank you for reading.
