Netgear WGR101 Cable/DSL Wireless Travel Router Review

This is one of those things that I bought, really hoping and wanting to be able to say good things about. I really wanted this to be a good product; but it's just not.
First off, the firmware releases have been quite buggy and while they have added WPA support, I find that it does not work well. I think that if you wanted to use this device without encryption and without changing the DHCP range and not in any sort of 'must-have' environment, maybe it would work. For me, all of those things have caused me more headaches than I care to remember.
I have had a lot of problems with...
-Using WPA with multiple devices connected at once, the signal drops every 60 minutes, like clockwork. To get the signal back, you have to repower the router and restart your wireless card. Very frustating. When I tried to get Netgear's help, they told me to reload the firmware - I did this but to no avail.
-The DNS passthrough resolution stinks. (Sorry if I 'tech out' on you here, but this is an issue some may find valuable to know about.) In many situations, I can not get DNS resolution through the 'gateway', which is of course the WRG101. To resolve I have to go into the router's browser interface, pull of the DNS server IPs that the hotel or ISP issued to the WAN port and manually configure my IP settings in my WinXP Pro machine to use those DNS servers. This works, but what a pain.
At the end of the day, I can't get Netgear to give me anything resembling decent support on this thing and I would say it only works for me 20% of the time without monkeying around with it. I keep trying (and hoping for better firmware)(as of v.1009 it still stinks) but I'm sure that someday this thing will find it's way into a hotel room garbage can - or better yet, out the window.
Look elsewhere if you want encryption and stability - this is a bummer product.

This thing doesn't work on a Mac. Starts off fine then disconnects for no reason.
Drivers are terrible. Can't find any support on the internet.
I'm about to throw it in the trash.

Zoom ZDTV Wireless Keyboard 9005-00-00F Review

The ZDTV is a great wireless keyboard/touchpad for those who want to sit on the sofa while controlling a computer connected to a TV. I have three TVs of varying ages in my house, each hooked up to my main computer. I was looking for a wireless keyboard with a long enough range that I could use it to control my computer while sitting in front of any of them. This allows me to have one Blu-Ray drive in my computer, no need for extra DVD/Blu-Ray players, no need to worry about the different NetFlix/Hulu/YouTube/... streaming "standards" popping up as extras on different set-top Blu-Ray players.
Pros:
+ Great range. As long as you place the USB receiver (about the size of a USB thumb drive) in a location not blocked by the metal of your computer's case, printer, refrigerator, etc you can go a fair distance, even with walls in the way. Once I dug out an old USB extension cable and used that to put the wireless receiver on top of my case I was able to go about 50 feet without trouble.
+ Great functionality, even WITHOUT Windows 7. I have this hooked up to a computer running Windows Vista x64 with no ZDTV drivers or software installed. It is picked up as a standard USB keyboard, so I am even able to enter my BIOS password with it, before any operating system even boots up. It will work with any computer/operating system that can handle a USB keyboard and mouse. Even without Windows 7 I was pleasantly surprised that the specialty buttons along the sides of the touchpad correctly start up Windows Media Center, Windows Media Player, your default web browser, Play/Pause, Stop, Mute, Volume Up, and Volume Down. (The Magnification and Magnification Level buttons require the Windows 7 only software to work.)
+ Standard sized keys. Many wireless keyboards aimed at the HDTV/Computer market are "compact", trying to make the entire keyboard smaller but using keys that are a tad smaller than standard. For touch-typists this can easily through you off, especially with those farther out towards edges. The ZDTV keyboard uses full sized keys so touch typing does not suffer, and although it is a fairly thin keyboard with shallow keys, the depth of travel of the keys is very good, which also makes it feel like you are typing on a standard desktop keyboard even though it is a fair bit slimmer.
+ Large, deep touchpad. This is one of the larger touchpads I have used. Having a small touchpad with a netbook isn't too much of a hassle, but when setting a wireless keyboard on your lap, controlling a big screen TV with a fairly high resolution that is several feet away means that a larger touchpad allows you to have more stable, precise control of the cursor. The touchpad is also recessed a bit, helping to prevent the user from unintentionally moving the cursor as they type due to their thumb or palm brushing against the surface of the touchpad area.
+ Multi-touch touchpad. The touchpad has a right and left button under it, but it also uses mutli-touch in an interesting manner. A single tap acts as a left-click (double-tap for double-click, double-tap and slide for dragging.) A two-finger tap acts as the middle mouse button. A three-finger tap acts as a right-click. A two-finger vertical movement will act as a scroll up/down.
+ Energy conscious. It runs off of four AAA batteries (I use rechargeables.) It automatically turns itself off after a few minutes of non-use. Unlike other wireless keyboards there is no on-off switch. Using the touchpad will NOT wake it up, but ANY key press (including SHIFT or FN, safe ones to use since they won't trigger any program to do something unintended) will wake it up.Cons:
- No Caps/Scroll/Num Lock indicators. This is not a huge negative, but it can be an annoyance at times. I have a standard keyboard connected as well as the ZDTV wireless keyboard. Toggling Caps/Scroll/Num Lock with one will also do it to the other. My standard keyboard has a number pad, so I tend to leave Num-Lock on since I do a fair bit of work with spreadsheets. If I switch to the ZDTV keyboard and do not disable Num-Lock then suddenly U becomes 4, I becomes 5, O becomes 6, etc. This became quite annoying at first when I was trying to use it to put in a password and didn't realize what was going on (a U and a 4 both appear as a * in that case, so I didn't realize what was going on for a while.) Pressing Fn-NumLock on the ZDTV keyboard will toggle Num Lock for both keyboards so you can correct this without going back to the main computer, but it would be nice to have some form of Cap/Num/Scroll Lock indicator on the ZDTV keybaord.
Well, I guess only one con, so that should be "Con", not "Cons" ;-).

Apple Mac mini M9687LL/B (1.42 GHz PowerPC G4, 512 MB DDR SDRAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Drive) Review

The Mac Mini was released in January 2005 at Mac World, and was then updated, for the first time, in July 2005. This Mac Mini is the result of that update.
Improvements - The $599 Mac Mini now sports 512 MB of DDR SDRAM, which is twice the memory the original Mac Mini included. This is a significant upgrade. The majority of users can now buy, out of the box, a machine that performs beautifully and allows a fair amount of multi-tasking. The Mac operating system, Mac OS X Tiger, thrives on memory, and 512 MB helps to create a speedy experience, for users.
Bluetooth - Bluetooth is a great wireless technology that Apple heavily backs, and it is included with this Mac Mini, an addition, from the original Mac Minis, when bluetooth was an optional add-on, at Apple.com, for $50 more. Purchase a bluetooth keyboard or bluetooth mouse, and they will work wirelessly, with your Mac Mini. It makes for a very clean and uncluttered desktop. There are also many mobile phones and PDAs, which utilize bluetooth technology, which you can sync to your mac using isync, included with Mac Mini.
Airport Extreme - This is the wireless networking card now included with the $599 Mac Mini, after being a $70+ upgrade at Apple.com, on the previous model. Do you have a wireless-b or wireless-g network in your home? If so, the Mac Mini will be able to connect to it, without problem. Again, making the computing experience simpler and less tangled.
The Good Things that Continue to Shine with Mac Mini - A buyer of the Mac Mini will continue to enjoy Mac OS X Tiger, which is the best consumer operating system in the world. It works with the hardware beautifully to provide a simple, fast, elegant, and reliable experience. One of the favorite descriptions of Mac fans, to describe Macs, is simply, "it just works."
The Mac Mini continues to include iLife '05, with great applications such as iPhoto, iMovie HD, iDVD, iTunes, and Garageband. These are all included, with every Mac Mini. You will be challenged to find any PC that includes applications that come anywhere close to the iLife suite. Manage thousands of your digital images in iPhoto, create home movies in iMovie, and create professional music in Garageband.
Appleworks is included for simply word processing, spreadsheets, etc., but you might want to pick up Microsoft Office for Mac. A student/teacher edition is available, for just over $100.
Speed - The 1.42 GHZ PowerPC G4 processor makes the Mac Mini a very capable machine. This will satisfy the horsepower needed to complete tasks in the iLife suite, included with your Mac Mini.
Hard Drive - 80 GB is a significant-sized hard drive, so you will be able to store thousands of photos and songs.
ComboDrive - The Apple Combo Drive allows you to burn music and data CDs, plus you can watch DVDs!
Drawbacks? The $599 version of the Mac Mini no longer includes a modem, if you want this version of the Mac Mini with a modem, you will have to custom-order it at Apple.com. However, the ethernet port is included on the back, to plug into a DSL or cable modem, plus you have the Airport Extreme, for wireless connections. However, if you don't have broadband, you'll need a modem for dial-up, so you will either need to order a custom-built Mac Mini at Apple.com, or buy the stock $499 model, which includes a modem, but lacks the wireless components.
Overall, Apple has created another fantastic product, with the Mac Mini, and the July 2005 update only made it better. You get more memory, plus wireless connectivity via bluetooth and airport extreme. This Mac Mini really includes everything the average user needs to enjoy the internet, manage his or her digital life, and have fun doing it all.

PLANEX Wireless-N High Speed USB Adapter GW-USNano designed in Japan Review

I have Windows Vista 64 bit and I find I am rather puzzled why people left so much negativity in regards to this product. It works perfect for me. I had no issue whatsoever in installing, and there was no "Engrish" in the instructions. I bought this so my son could use the WiFi for his Nintendo Dsi and, as I stated, it does the job just fine. Very pleased with my purchase.
