NETGEAR XAVB101 Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit Review

Have had Directv for years. Felt it was about time for me to upgrade to one of their new products......I think technology has left my old brain in the dust! Anyway, I got the HD DVR, which is capable of VOD (video on demand). To use this service it requires a hook up from the internet router to the Directv receiver. Well, my router is in the den and no where close enough to the new HD equipment. I really felt that the digital video recorder and the receiver would be the extent of my use. I was reading about the Netgear Powerline Adapter and was hoping it would solve the VOD hookup problem (terrible to have something and not be able to use it). Was thinking I would have to call someone in to help set this up, as my lack of understand electronics would amaze anyone. The product arrived, hardly any instructions. The two units plug into a wall electrical outlet, one in each room. The one in the den plugs into the Linksys wireless G router with the supplied Ethernet cable, the second unit plugs into an electrical outlet near the TV and the satellite box, hooked up with a second Ethernet cable. Now the unbelievable part of the story----the whole thing works and I did it myself! I am bragging because I have a problem screwing in a light bulb. Now, thanks to the Powerline AV kit I have video on demand, which I thought I would never get to use. I am sure if you can plug in a toaster you will have no problem hooking this up. Hope I didn't bore you with this, but you must understand this is a major accomplishment for me.

NETGEAR XE104 85 Mbps Powerline 4-Port Ethernet Adapter Review

Bought two. Plugged in one in my home office with a Cat5 coming from my WRT54G router.
Plugged the other one in on the opposite side of my ranch townhome. Got the blue light sync indicator within 5 seconds. Plugged in my laptop and got an IP from the Linksys five seconds after that..
Works perfectly. No drops. Just like an ethernet cable would be. Since it has four ports, plugged in the Tivo via the USB/Ethernet I already had. That also grabbed an IP and worked perfectly.
Consistent speed of copying WinXP SP2 off my PC in my home office to my laptop in the living room using the two 104s is about 15 Mbps or so as measured by Netstat on my laptop. Is it equal to Cat5? Is it ANYWHERE NEAR 85 Mbps as Netgear advertises? NOT A CHANCE. Connecting the laptop to my LAN by directly connecting into the WRT54G resulted in the same file being moved from the same PC at just over 75 Mbps. So, the 15 Mbps speed of the 104s is about 20% of the LAN's speed moving the same file.
The Netgear software says the two are connected at just about 40 Mbps. So, figure less than half that in real speed.
But overall, it does work. It's more than enough speed for me to avoid the hassles and drops of wireless, not to mention having to use WEP since my Tivo can't currently support WPA.
Clearly, this is a YMMV product. Buy it and take the shot. You might get enough speed. Or you may not even have it sync up. That's why I bought it from Amazon so I could return it if I had too. Could have gotten it a bit cheaper elsewhere, but why risk it?
If I was streaming HD files, it wouldn't work. But for not having to deal with cutting through 19 (!) wireless networks that my 802.XX Site Monitor can see, and fighting the inevitable XP wireless drops, it works fine for me. I was going to go for the Slinglink first but figured I might as well try for faster speeds. I'm glad I spent the extra $$$$ over it and the older Netgear 102s.
5 stars for ease of use. 1 star for the laughable real speed versus Netgear's advertising. Thus, an average of 3 stars.
EDIT TO ORIGINAL REVIEW: I have `SBC/ATT/Whatever they are today' DSL. I tweaked my RCP Receive Window (RWIN) from blank (whoopps) to 17,424 (as well as other settings) per DSLReports.com's suggestion in order to accommodate the new 6.0/764 RT based speed profile I recently received. In doing do, the speed of file transfers referenced above via the 104 dropped from about 15 megs to less than 10. When I removed the RWIN setting restoring it to its state before messing with it, the speed returned to the 15 megs.
So, if you've tweaked your registry settings for maximum broadband download speed and are not getting great results with the 104, you might want to do a little tweaking trade off between the two to get the speeds you're seeking on both the 104 and your broadband access. My results of both speeds is still in 'messing around with' mode and I haven't yet found that perfect blend.
EDIT TO ORIGINAL REVIEW #2 - 06/11/2006: Still working fine. Speeds are consistent with what I originally posted. It's never failed once to work the way it's intended. I've never dropped an IP and I've never plugged in the laptop and not had it work within a few seconds. A good product in my specific enviornment. I'll buy another one so I can plug in the laptop anywhere in my place, even the deck outside and not have to fight wireless drops. Now if they'd only release the 1.6 firmware....

NETGEAR XE104 85 Mbps Powerline 4-Port Ethernet Adapter Overview

The NETGEAR XE104 85 Mbps Powerline 4-Port Ethernet Adapter lets you easily extend a network using just the existing electric lines of your home, eliminating the need to run unsightly Ethernet wires all over your house or apartment. With four ports, you can connect multiple devices to one adapter and at 85 Mbps, you'll have more than enough speed to download music, stream videos, and make internet telephone calls without any hiccups.
True Plug and Play Installation Extending a network using the electric lines in your home requires an XE104 unit and an additional NETGEAR XE103 Powerline Ethernet Adapter. Simply plug the XE103 into a wall outlet and connect it to your router with an Ethernet cord. Then plug the XE104 into the wall outlet where you need a network connection and connect it to as many as four Ethernet-ready devices. That's it. There's no software to install. Netgear 85Mbps Powerline Network Adapter Kit - XETB1001 Review

Your Prayers Have Been Answered!
OK, this story dates back about two years or at least it feels that long. I have a long ranch style home and Comcast cable with a router. My issue has always been getting one of our three Xbox consoles to connect and all three from getting kicked off periodically. Needless to say, the one console that has a hard time connecting is the farthest away from the router. I would say it is 60 to 70 feet away and up stairs. So let's go through the check list of things I purchased that did not work:
Routers -
Linksys G, Linksys G MaxRange, and Linksys N routers.
Belkin N+N Dual Band
Same problem. Bad of no connection to Xbox Live.
And yes, I purchased the new Xbox N adapter and it improved the signal but it did not fix the problem.
What a failed to tell you is that about 1 month into the problem a guy at Best Buy told me about the PowerLine adapters that use the wiring in your home to send your network connection to any outlet where you plug in a second PowerLine adapter and connect something to your network. At the time, it was over $100 and it sounded like crazy talk, so I dismissed the idea. Stupid of me bigtime.
Yes, you guessed it. After months of sitting up late reading, trying this and trying that, talking to dang technical support reps. from third world countries that have no clue how to speak English, I finally went back and purchased the PowerLine adapter.
Before I tell you how that went, one more major deal I learned along the way. Attention Comcast Customers......how about a free N router newsflash?
If you are a Comcast customer and you are using a Comcast Modem which you are charged $5 a month for like it or not, it comes with a Netgear N wireless router at no additional cost. You heard me, no additional cost. The old billing system was that Comcast charged $3 a month for the modem and $2 a month for the router. Now you are charged $5 for the modem period and it is up to you to figure out that you also get a Netgear N router at no additional cost. Isn't it funny how Comcast does not volunteer that information? No telling how many folks have gone out and purchased a router when they were already renting one from Comcast but not getting it.
OK, back to my story.
So I go home with my long overdue purchase of the PowerLine adapter. (For just $79 now.) In the box was two adapters and two Ethernet cords. They are interchangeable. I plug one into the outlet close to my FREE Netgear router from Comcast and connect the Ethernet cord from the PowerLine adapter to one of the four ports in the back of my FREE Netgear router. Then I walked upstairs and to the other end of my house to the problem Xbox and unhook the piece-of-poo Xbox N Adapter from the back of the Xbox. I took the second PowerLine adapter and plug it into the electrical outlet close to the Xbox and then connect the Ethernet cord from the Xbox to the Powerline adapter I has just plugged into the wall outlet and the lights on the PowerLine adapter came on. I am thinking that that time.....NO, it can't be connected. No way, not after all these months of trying to figure this out. My son, quickly turns on the Xbox, goes to the connection set-up screen and what did it say? Xbox Live us up and running! Hallelujah! No weak bars of signal, it was not connecting and disconnecting, that baby was direct connected via a wireless signal being sent through the power lines in my house. He quickly cranked up Modern Warefare 2 and the rest is history. Online playing bliss. No more, Dad, the Xbox kicked me off again. No more spelling my name out to a person that does not understand English. It just works.
Let my pain be your gain. Go get yours and enjoy.

Actiontec MegaPlug 200 Mbps AV Powerline Ethernet Adapter and 4-Port Hub Kit Review

ActionTec plug Av
Very Easy to set up if you had all the instructions.
A quick review and as typical for me an update will follow. I had everything set up and truly believed the Quick Start Guide when it said no configuration required. Unfortunately.... I first disabled my wireless card in the Windows Control Panel just so I would not have any conflicts. Then I plugged in the two devices as described above. The LEDs on both boxes were green and red, sometimes green and yellow. The Guide said "Make sure both lights turn solid green". The guide warns you not to plug the devices into any outlet that is surge protected or filtered, which I did not. Oh well I said, I started moving both boxes into different outlets and could not get both "link" lights to turn green unless they were plugged into the same outlet. Rats I said. There is no explanation in the guide at all as to what to do when the lights are not both green. NO troubleshooting guide at all. I tried to hook up to the Web, but nothing happened.
Here I will save you the trouble of the hour long process that followed, and just tell how you can save yourself the trouble I had
1. It does not really matter what color the "link" light is. It is only the quality of connection indicator. Please go to the [...] website and download the user manual for the HPE400AVP. There is no manual and no CD with the box you buy and in my case it was the critical missing step. Here is the lights portion of the manual
Red means the condition is poor and less than 50Mpbs,
Orange indicates a fair line condition of 50-100Mbps,
Green means the line is in good condition with over 100Mbps throughput.
Of course since I was using wireless previously in a remote location with a 18 Mpbs transfer speed, even a Red light meant a vastly improved connection. The connection speed varies for me between yellow and red, and always is better than the wireless. My wireless was a Linksys WRT54G with the power setting at 75mw, the distance involved was about 50ft with 3 walls in between.
2. There are small black buttons on both boxes, but NO explanation in the User Guide as to what they do. You have to download the manual for that. They are the security enable keys, and you have to go thru a sequence of four timed presses to set it up. In my trials of various outlets in the house, I must have pressed one or both, but in a wrong sequence and must have messed up the communications, hence even with the connection established, I could not connect to the web. At the time I still thought that it was because I had red lights and they needed to be green. I had to reset both boxes using a pin.
3. At this point following the reset, even though the link light on both boxes was red, the Internet magically appeared. So the setup is truly plug and play, unless like me you believe the dreaded step #13 in the quick setup guide "Make sure both lights are green " or you accidentally press the security buttons.
Finally when set up, and even with my troubles it only took an hour. The connection speed to the web as judged by [...] was 50% faster than my best wireless connection and 3 times better than my worst connection. Great product, and only a one star downgrade for no packaged in manual or CD.
Lastly you may also try the following steps to improve your speed at lower costs.
1. Get an antenna with gain for the router and your wireless card (10-30$, 50% improvement)
2. Change the wireless channel in the router utility (G networks conflict with 2.4 ghz cordless phones)
3. Move the antenna even slightly for possible improvement, Use a utility like network stumbler to fine tune the position
4. If available for your wireless router, get an open source custom firmware for it which will allow you to fine tune the antenna transmit power (I use Tomato).
UPDATE
5. Get an inexpensive N standard router with multiple antennas (used to be called MIMO multiple in multiple out). I have picked up one recently and now all my remaining computers have a better signal as well. While you will not get speds higher than G standard of 54mb, you will get closer to nominal. You would ned a N adapter in the pc as well to get all the benefits.
Happy Powerline and Wireless networking.

Sling Media SlingLink Turbo Powerline Kit ( SL200-100 ) Review

This may or may not work for you. I've got it working in my house. I've got a Netgear router upstairs in my bonus room hooked up to a Charter Cable box. My Dish reciever is downstairs in another section of my house. The Slinglink Turbo works fairly well; however, if I plug anything else into certain outlets in my bonus room, the whole connection basically just fails. So be aware of what you have plugged into other outlets as it might cause the whole thing to fail.

Sling Media SlingLink Turbo Powerline Kit ( SL200-100 ) Overview

The SlingLink Turbo brings network connectivity to any electrical wall outlet, making it ideal for the modern living room with blisteringly fast speeds up to 85 Mbps. With four switched ports, it connects your Slingbox, game console, DVR, computer or anything with an Ethernet jack to your home network. Now you can run high-speed Internet through your existing electrical wiring with a simple plug-and-play connection. Plus, SlingLink Turbo is compatible with any home router.

Cisco-Linksys USB200HA HomeLink Phoneline 10M USB Network Adapter Review

I could not rewire my house. There was too much distance and too many obstructions for wireless - and I was concerned about security. I installed the Linksys phoneline router and USB phoneline adapters. Everthing installed easily. Works great. And has been working great for about a year. Slower than Ethernet (I can tell when I transfer files between PCs) - but faster than my DSL connection - which is all that matters. Anyone who wants a no new wires installation should consider this approach.

Brite-View 200 Mbps Digital Home Powerline Ethernet Adapters included 1-port Bridge & 4-port Switch Review

I bought this got in 3 days unpack it plug it up that's it. No software to install or configuration needed. Since it has 4 port switch I am using 3 out of 4 ports. 1.) Internet traffic (laptop), 2.) for Internet Radio, 3.) Hook up to Dish Network HD receiver to watch On-Demand stuff. It comes with a CD but I did use it. REMEMBER to hook up this directly to wall outlet for full maximum speed, if you use any Power Surge device or extension cord it will reduce the ethernet speed. I have tested this several different ways but directly to wall outlet is the best way.

NETGEAR XAV101 Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Review

I purchased 3 of these units (the 2 unit kit plus one additional) for my home media distribution. Originally I had planned to use only wireless, but found too many signal disruptions causing HD video to become choppy or drop completely. I have one connected to a Linksys DMA2100 extender, one to my DirecTV HD DVR and one to my Vista Media server. DirecTV VOD works flawlessly, as does the extender. This solution is more expensive than running CAT6, but it is so easy to set up and use that I didn't mind the extra cost. Another thing: one of these units is in my family room, and I was worried about the green lights being a distraction. There is a utility that comes with these devices that allows you to turn the indicators off if you desire. Overall, I've been very happy with these units.

NETGEAR XAV101 Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Overview

The award-winning NETGEAR XAV101 Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter turns any electrical power outlet in your home into a network connection. With this adapter, you can network your game consoles, PCs, DVRs, network storage devices, and other components without suffering from weak wireless signals or unsightly cables running through your home. If you're looking for a fast, easy, and reliable way to provide Ethernet connectivity to the farthest reaches of your home, then this adapter is the perfect solution.
Turn your home's electrical outlets into network connections. View larger. Plug-and-Play Setup Gets You Going Fast A PC Magazine Editor's Choice, the Powerline AV is a snap to set up. Just plug one XAV101 adapter into an available electrical socket near your router, and connect your router to it. Then plug a second XAV101 adapter (not included) into any electrical socket that's located near the device you want to network. When you connect your device into the XAV101, it will be connected to your network.
It's as simple as that. There's no software to install, no passwords to remember, and no configuration whatsoever. And you can easily create more network connections throughout your home by simply installing additional adapters.
Please note that this product comes with only one XAV101 adapter. You'll need at least two adapters to create your network. You can also purchase the NETGEAR XAVB101 Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit, which includes two adapters.
Fast Network Connection for Media Streaming The Powerline AV supports the Homeplug AV protocol and delivers up to 200 Mbps network speed, fast enough for high-quality HD video streaming, music streaming, gaming, and VoIP (Voice-over-Internet Protocol) telephone calls. The Powerline AV Ethernet adapter is perfect for devices such as TiVo, Slingbox, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, networked televisions, and more.
Push-Button Security for Extra Safety Unlike wireless connections, a Powerline network connection is secure. The XAV101 supports 128-bit AES encryption.
