Cisco PVC2300 Business Internet Security Video Camera w/Audio Review

Excellent camera, very easy to setup and works great. I have (2) more of the PVC2300, and (1) WVC2300 wireless camera and all work fine with no issues. I have a Linksys/Cisco RV082 Router and configured port forwarding to access from the internet. If you have DHCP with your ISP, you will need to setup dynamic DNS with a provider in order to view the camera over the internet. I use DynDNS and it works fine. The 2-way sound work fine, but the volume is a bit loud when it forst comes on. You will need to tweak it to the volume you prefer.

RCA RC920 Wireless Phone Jack Extension Review

I've been using a set of these for over a year, and they are a godsend but not perfect. The good news; I use it to connect my Tivo (Tivo needs to dial in every night to update its program data) and it was the perfect solution for a tough spot, since there's no phone jack anywhere near my television. I have also used it to surf the web with a dial-up connection, with no real problems. Its fine, even through an extension cord! The bad news; I've tried to use for a phone, and that rally didn't cut it. It worked, but its a bad connection. I couldn't tolerate it. So I dispute the earlier comment that it can't be used for data. For me, its only use is for data, not voice! For certain situations, its ideal.

RCA RC920 Wireless Phone Jack Extension Overview

BlueProton High-Gain 23dBm WiFi N USB 2.0 802.11n Wireless Network Adapter (b/g compatible) by Gsky Review

I bought this is the fall of 2010. It was a replacement for the built-in 802.11g card for my HP Pavilion laptop, which had failed.
PROS: Installation from the CD was straightforward. You should go there first instead of using the default Windows installation. Speed is decent. Since this is my first 802.11n device, it is talking to my 802.11g access point.
CONS: This adapter is really wide, so that even a skinny USB plug next to it has to touch and angle slightly outward. It doesn't fit at all on the USB next to the power cord.
I asked RealTek for some technical support early on, and have received nothing (not even an automated email acknowledgment) as of a week later. I have since fixed the problem, but there is very little forum chatter about this product. The RealTek support site does not have an image of the installation CD.
The Realtek USB Wireless LAN utility is easy to use I am using instead of the built-in Windows utility.

NETGEAR N750 450 Mbps Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router WNDR4000 Review

I bought this router due to being a tech junkie and the desire to have a router that can transfer files to my home server, via my laptop, in blazing fast speed. The Netgear WNDR4000 is part of the first bunch WiFi routers to support 3 spatial (data) streams (max 450 Mbps of bandwidth) on the 5 GHz band. I would say the router provides a solid connection (no drop outs.... yet.. my old WRT610N from Linksys had this problem), slightly higher throughput in file transfers then my Netgear WNDR3700 on the 5GHz band, easy to setup, and great parental control feature.
The down side of the router is that the 2.4 GHz band only has 2 spatial data streams for a max data link speed of 300 Mbps. Comparing the throughput on the 5GHz band between the WNDR3700 and WNDR4000 only showed a 15% gain instead of the expected 50% gain (300 Mbps vs 450 Mbps).
I also have the Cisco E4200, another router with 3 spatial streams on the 5GHz, that I am trying out and I would say it has the same throughput performance as the WNDR4000, better setup utility, and no so great parental controls.
Setup:
Inside the WNDR4000 box, you get the router, power adapter, Ethernet cable, and resource CD (documents and "Smart Wizard" application). Setup of the router is easy, just plug in the power adapter, Ethernet cable to your computer, and configure the router.
You have two approaches to configure the router; the classic web interface for people with experience or the "Smart Wizard" for people who want an easy approach without getting lost in the details. The web interface for the router setup is the same as the previous model, WNDR3700, so it was a breeze to do. Just setup the wireless security, forward ports for my networked devices, and I was ready to go. My PS3, Vulkano, and Windows Home Server had no issues working with the router.
Using the "Smart Guide" program only allows you to setup your wireless SSID and security password. For parental controls, Netgear provides a separate utility powered by a company called OpenDNS. It allows you to block up to 57 different website categories during different times of the day.
The setup utility (Cisco Connect) for the Cisco E4200 router is slightly better then the Netgear utility. Cisco Connect allows you to configure more features, such as guest network, upgrade router firmware, modify setup key, etc. For it's parental control, you have to manually input the website you want to block
Performance:
Wanting to know whether I made the right move with buying the router, I measured the throughput of the 5 GHz band on the WNDR3700, WNDR4000, and E4200 router. I used the tool "LAN Speed Test" to measure the throughput of the laptop, in the same room of the router, to my server on the router's gigabit port. My laptop has the Intel 6300 wifi card which supports the 3 data stream. The WNDR3700 showed 115 Mbps up and 128 Mbps down, WNDR4000 is 134 Mbps up and 140 Mbps down, and the E4200 showed 129 Mbps up and 148 Mbps down. As you can see from the numbers, the WNDR4000 is roughly 15% faster then the WNDR3700. At the 2.4 GHz band, all routers were around the same speed; 60 Mbps up and 70 Mbps down.
I live in a small apartment thus I could not test the range on the router. From inside the apartment, the routers have similar signal quality at different areas in the apartment.
Summary:
Overall, I am pleased with the router. However, I am docking one star from the rating for the router only delivering 2 stream (not 3) for the 2.4 GHz band (not sure why they did this, I hope it is not some standard) and for only the small 15% speed increase compared to the WNDR3700. Since these routers just came out, I guess we will have to wait to see how robust they are (hardware life and firmware issues).
Background:
As of March 28, 2011, the latest 3 wireless router from Netgear are:
WNDR3700v2 aka WNDR37AV - (680 MHz processor - MIPS 24K core) Dual Band gigabit router with 300 Mbps max on the 2.4 GHz & 5 GHz band.
WNDR3800 - Similar to the WNDR37AV, but with the following features: Print server capable, Clear Channel Selector, and Quick Start, Steady Stream HD.
WNDR4000 - (480 MHz processor - MIPS 74K core) Dual band gigabit router with 300 Mbps max on 2.4 GHz & 450 Mbps max on the 5 GHz band. It does NOT have the additional features on the WNDR3800.
The WNDR3700v2 and WNDR4000 have 64 MB RAM and they are based on the 802.11N final version.

I almost bought one of these until I read the fine print.
The "real" Flip UltraHAD 3rd Generation has 60 fps recording speed for better action shots AND electronic stabilization - two BIG features.
I can give up the 4 gb of extra storage on the "regular" model, but his "Black Friday" model blowing out at Walmart, Best Buy, and Amazon strikes me as a "come on" - it omits the two essential features that make the 3rd Generation Flips of interest - the higher frame rate (60 fps vs 30 fps on this one) and the stabilization. Read the specs and blurbs on the REAL model you need to be looking at:

Cisco WVC210 Wireless-G PTZ Internet Security Video Camera -w/2-Way Audio Review

Highlights: reasonable value for the money - good hardware, better than WVC200, lousy software - having used it for a few months, I would buy another, but there's still lots of room for improvement. PTZ: only digital Zoom (not optical - so really, there's no Zoom, just Pan, Tilt).
Details: I purchased the camera in December, 2008. Prior to using the WVC210, I've used two WVC200s. The 210 is an improvement over the 200 - better color, better image in low light, two-way audio, and I haven't had to reboot the 210 (the 200s are prone to lockups, occasionally). I use the "Kiwi Syslog Daemon" with all the cameras. And, the 210 audit trail is much improved over the 200. One key logging feature that the 210 has, is the ability to audit who logged in/out (and when) - the 200 does not do this. If you think about infrastructure security, this is a plus for the 210 and a HUGE mark against the 200. Like the 200, the 210 does not do motion detection - they both look at overall light level changes in a defined region. Labeling the function as "motion detection" is false advertising. Two outdoor examples: (1) if you setup a screen region and turn up the sensitivity, changes in sunlight (caused by clouds coming and going) will trigger a false motion-detection event (2) after turning down the gain to eliminate false sunlight triggers, objects (person, dog, car) that appears small at a distance can pass through the region without detection. Both cameras use an ActiveX control to view/listen to video/audio. The problem is, most public internet computers block the install of ActiveX controls, so if you want to check on your camera(s) while on vacation (off site), you better have your laptop along. Additionally, neither the 200 nor 210 accommodate this known shortcoming - for example, both could easily have a firmware upgrade to allow the user to see a snapshot JPG of the current image (when the ActiveX interface is not available) - neither camera has this feature. As for the monitoring software bundled with the 210 and 200 products, here Cisco has done an awful job as it takes over the ownership of these products from Linksys. The "Video Monitoring System v1.0.0.0" bundled with the 210 is not at all backward compatible with the 200. Adding insult, the interface is user-hostile, not allowing you to size it or move it - it has to be in the upper left corner of the screen and it wastes a lot of screen real-estate. The "Monitor v1.0.0.18" bundled with the 200 has a smaller footprint and it allows you to size and move the interface. It is forward compatible to the 210, but video only (not audio). It also gives you much more configuration control at your fingertips including volume control and on-the-fly record / stop / playback. In a nutshell, the interface of the old software is much better than the new stuff. If you will have a mix of WVC200 and WVC210 cameras, and if you want to use the monitoring software to record surveillance video, you will have to use the software that comes with the WVC200. This amp helped my tv reception and made my modem work faster. The TV stopped pix elating on the weaker TV channels. It also increased the power levels for the modem so the noise to power ratio levels were better and it didn't drop the internet any more.
I am running 6 Comcast cable on demand boxes, and one cable modem (a SB5100 modem)
I am happy with this product and will be buying another one to help one of my friends system out.

Cisco-Valet Connector Review

My goal was to connect my new desktop (running Windows 7) to my existing wireless network.
What I liked:
1. It worked - not to set the bar too low, but this was the second adapter I tried. So I was elated that this actually worked.
2. Ease of setup - no extra discs, just plug it into a USB port and the necessary drivers (and the actual Win7 drivers, which it seems most adapters on the market do not have pre-packaged) are right in the adapter itself. Though this was not perfect - see below.
3. The design is attractive and convenient with a built-in stand.
4. Speed seems good - no issues so far.
What I did not like - the setup software that comes with the device wants to be the controller for your network. After downloading the drivers it did not want the password for my network, but rather the Hexidecimal password. After shutting that part of the installer down I just used the wireless network function within Windows itself to locate and join my existing network. A minor issue at best.
My needs are simple, so I cannot say if this will be good for more complex situations/ needs, but it works and I'm happy.

Cisco-Linksys WRT120N Wireless-N Home Router Review

I hardly ever write reviews (like someone else said) but wow, what a piece of crap this is! DO NOT BUY THIS! The setup is easy but this router is junk. It will just stop working for no reason. I don't know if it is overheating or what. I have even tried flipping it over so the vents are facing up. It will just stop working once is a while. By once is a while I mean around 1-3 times a day. Sometimes I have to manually reset(unplug - the reset button doesn't always do it.). Other times it takes a few minutes to start working again. I had a $30 Belkin before and it lasted 2 years with no problems until the end. Once I find a good replacement I'm going to pull an Office Space on this thing.

GSKY High Power 500mW 27dBm 802.11b/g USB Wireless WiFi LAN Adapter With Bonus Screw-On Swivel 9dBi Rubber Antenna Review

I purchased this item after recently purchasing the Alfa, also offered by this seller on Amazon. (USB 500mW WiFI Adapter for Wardriving & Range Extension *Strongest on the Market* $51.99)
I liked the Alfa but this one had a bigger antenna and was cheaper and looked almost identical to my Alfa so I decided to give it a try. I'm not loving it. The setup was much more difficult and I couldn't get it working on my desktop running XP at all. The Alfa plugged right in and runs like a dream on it. Also, I actually get worse reception with the big antenna than I do with the small one.
All and all, I would recommend the Alfa over this one for ease of installation (installed on XP with no additional work and installed on Vista with driver from website pretty easily). Also the Alfa seems to more consistently maintain the signal and I got more bars with it then I am getting with this GSky.
Spend the extra few dollars and go with the Alfa. (By the way, I am a SAH mom, not a computer geek, so keep that in mind when I talk of ease of install and setup.)

Cisco RV220W Wireless Network Security Firewall Wired and Wireless Connectivity for Small Office Review

I provide IT support to my many business clients and have used Linksys routers for both home and small business networks forever. I've watched them get progressively worse in terms of reliability (with the exception of the old workhorse WRT54GL) since Cisco bought them. I was looking for a better alternative that supported 802.11n and came upon this Cisco-branded model. It is specifically targeted for the small business network but also works well for an advanced home network (for example, remote access to my Windows Home Server). The RV220W setup is done from a browser instead of using half-a-measure software/browser methods like the Linksys models.
Pros:
1) It supports the 8-10 wireless devices I've got connected to it at any given time without shutting down like the Linksys.
2) You can create a "guest" wireless network (VLAN) that doesn't have access to your internal wired/wireless network. Fair warning - you need some technical understanding of how those things work to set it up but the features are there to do it if you need it.
3) I haven't tried VPN connections to the router yet but I know I can VPN out through them reliably using PPTP (the Linksys were hit-and-miss).
4) I like the fact you don't have to register the unit to use it and get pestered to purchase support contracts like you do with most higher-end routers like the SonicWalls. There is a pay service (ProtectLink) to add some advanced filtering to the router but I have not tried it.
And a couple cons:
1) I couldn't add a simple url block without subscribing to the ProtectLink service. That's pretty basic and should be in there. Even the Linksys models can do that.
2) My Gbit wired devices often connect at 100 Mbit. A driver update got one device up to Gbit but not every time. 100 Mbit is usually adequate, but I paid extra for this model to support Gbit - I think it might need a firmware update.
All told, a good step up in reliability from the "consumer" models for a small business or advanced home network when you don't want to pay for ongoing maintenance contracts.

4/4/2011: The day and night video is pretty good. The installation process was flawless. Unfortunately I can't use the camera as a baby monitor since the audio static is awful. The static is so loud you can't hear anything. Hopefully Dlink will address my concern. I'll update my review once I hear back from them. See my video if you'd like to hear the bad static. Also Dlink hasn't fixed the audio problem with the Iphone App. You only get video with the Iphone. I have the Iphone 4 with iOS 4.3 installed.
4/5/2011: I contacted Dlink support. They said they know about the audio problem and they don't plan to fix it. Ughh! I'm going to return this one and see if a new one sounds better. I'll post more once I get the new one.
4/14/2011: I received my new DCS-932L from Amazon today. The audio is just as bad with this camera. What a shame. I even upgraded my java version to 1.6.0_24-b07. Ughh. Time to send it back or pray for a firmware fix.
8/31/2011: We've started to use this camera all the time since our baby is older and Iphone support has been added. The audio is good enough where we can hear him. I just wish Dlink would get rid of the static.

Cisco Wireless-N VPN Firewall - Router Review

Ok, after waiting for this to come back in stock for a few weeks, I finally got it. I've had Linksys, D-Link, and Netgear network hardware, and wasn't satisfied by them. Yes, I know Linksys is owned by Cisco, but let's face it, if you know networking, you know they AREN'T the same.
Now before I get flack for my title, the setup being easy is relative to your savvy. If you've never heard of VPN, don't know what QOS or SPI stand for and actually mean, this probably isn't the route to take. There are TONS of decent home user level routers that do what you want, and are probably a bit easier to determine what features you want to use or don't want to use. Now, for the rest, this is a decent buy.
Not that I'm a CCNA or above, but I know when I don't get what I want out of a router. I also know that I love to tinker with my tech toys, and this gives me the freedom to giggle like a fool while I fiddle with the features. All in all, thumbs up.
Pros:
* Price. Let's face it; the Cisco Small Business line is a smashing deal. Cisco gear at a decent price? That's not to say that Linksys or Netgear doesn't make their "Professional Series" gear with the same functionality, but I trust Cisco. At ~150 bucks, you can't beat it.
* All the nitty gritty features that everyone wants, but no one wants to setup via the CLI, can be done through the web setup interface. In fact, you have no choice (that being said, don't go nuts on this point until you see Cons).
* Logging. Yes, logging. Basic, but necessary. The routers I've known didn't have logs available.
* Status reports. View how your router's doing. Things going slowly and suspect an attack? You can check your router's logs and the reports to see if things indicate an attack. How many home users can say that?!
Cons:
* No command line option. At least not that I've read about or seen. Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not sure how viable this is for a business as this is the case.
* Setup can be a bit touchy, though overall it isn't bad. The detecting router portion of it was a bit flaky, but again, not something that was a deal breaker.
Conclusion:
This is a power users router, or an extremely small business router that doesn't have a network administrator/NOC. Not something I'd implement if you have those things and if you need completely customized configurations. It just won't have all the flexibility or power of a higher scale solution.
I'll update this after I use the router more, but thus far, it's neat. We'll see if the Cisco quality came along with the branding on the small business series.
