D-Link DAP-1522 Xtreme 4-Port GigaBit Selectable Dual Band Draft 802.11n N Duo Wireless Bridge/Access Point Review

I've configured the DAP-1522 as a wireless bridge to a DIR-655 (2.5Ghz). I've got a PS3 and a Satellite DVR connected to two of the four ethernet ports on the DAP-1522. I have configured the 1522 to use WPA2 security as well.
Setup was a little tricky, but it was my fault not the fault of the 1522. If you choose to manually configure the 1522 be sure you follow the directions and connect the 1522 to your computer and with your computer configured to use a static IP address in the 192.168.0/24 subnet. I mistakenly had my computer still trying to use DHCP when connecting to the bridge and it took me a little while to figure out what was wrong. My computer couldn't get an IP address and so Windows kept assigning an address from a different subnet, so I was not able to establish a connection to the DAP-1522's default 192.168.0.50 IP address.
The 1522 works as expected. Performance is very good with a max of 162Mbps through 3 drywall walls (approx 40 ft) to my entertainment center as displayed on the DIR-655 console. I haven't run any local network bandwidth tests to verify the throughput yet, but I can easily stream HD content without blocking between a PS3 and a wired media server. Previously I was using the PS3's internal 802.11g network interface, and HD media was not viewable as it overwhelmed the 11g link.
I did notice that the orientation of the DIR-655 and the DAP-1522 did make a difference in the reported signal strength and data rate as seen from the DIR-655 console. So after you've gotten things to work, don't forget to run some experiments to determine the best position for the devices to get the best performance possible.

NETGEAR ME102 - Wireless access point - Ethernet Review

I just received my ME102 today, and it was up and running in 5 minutes (not counting the time required to drive the screws [included] to wall-mount the unit near one of my Ethernet switches).
I didn't find the USB-based configuration to be ideal. To be sure, it worked well. But I don't like installing drivers and software on my PC that will be used only once or occasionally, and the rest of the time just adds more junk to the Windows registry and is yet another thing added to program groups. (I have issues with clutter.)
In any case, as others here have mentioned, documentation is sparse indeed. And frankly, if you don't know your TCP/IP network pretty well, and/or don't know the basics of wireless Ethernet concepts, you might well find yourself in over your head. The default configuration is far from one-size-fits-all, and the average home computer user will have trouble changing it -- especially with the somewhat non-intuitive interface to the config software.
All that said, once this baby is set-up and running, it's great. I get terrific range and excellent performance, even with a basement mounted access point.
My only caution: Beware of your 2.4 GHz cordless phones. This would be true of any 802.11b set-up, but some of these cordless phones will chew-up your data stream and spit it out in chunks on the carpet. Here, I have my choice between using the wireless Ethernet, or using a Panasonic 2.4 GHz phone... Any attempts to use both, and the phone wins. (The Panasonic is going in the trash very soon; a Uniden 2.4 GHz model cooperates fine.)

NETGEAR WG602 54 Mbps 802.11g Wireless Access Point Review

I bought this item, because, on the back of the box, it shows the WG602 being used as a bridge to connect to a WGT624 access point. This is extremely misleading, and well, plain wrong, as a couple of other reviewers have pointed out. I was on the phone with extremely unhelpful tech support (that they outsourced to India, I believe), and it took several hours of run-around for the support guy to actually admit that the two products are not compatible (he had to ask someone else). Had he researched this properly in the beginning, hours would have been saved. I was eventually informed (after being told to upgrade firware, change numerous settings, etc.) that the WG602 would only bridge to another WG602. THE BACK OF THE BOX IS WRONG! Don't buy this if you're looking for a bridge that's compatible with any other AP.

NETGEAR WG602 54 Mbps 802.11g Wireless Access Point Overview

The NETGEAR WG602 54 Mbps 802.11g Wireless Access Point lets you easily set up a wireless network in your home so you can share a single internet connection with everyone in your household at speeds up to 54 Mbps. Note that to share an internet connection you will need a router into which you can plug the WG602 access point. If you do not have a router, consider NETGEAR's Wireless-G Router WGR614."
Easy Setup The WG602 makes it easy for even a novice to set up a wireless network: just plug the included Ethernet cable from your LAN into the device and insert the included CD into any computer on the network, which will provide step-by-step instructions. The WG602 offers a myriad of placement options by including a stand for vertical placement and slots on the bottom for mounting on a wall or ceiling. The default 2 dBi omnidirectional antenna can be removed and you can install an external antenna most suited for your needs onto the standard SMA connector.
The WG602 employs a web-based interface for configuration, allowing you to adjust settings such as the beacon interval, RTS threshold, and DTIM interval. The firmware is also upgradeable via the web interface so you can be sure your access point will always be up-to-date.
Fast and Secure Supporting the 802.11g standard, the NETGEAR WG602 offers data speeds of up to 54 Mbps, making it possible to share a broadband internet connection, stream music without hiccups, watch videos with less load time, and videoconference without problems. Downloading files is up to five times faster than it was with 802.11b. If you still have computers that use 802.11b, don't fret as the access point is backwards compatible with the older wireless standard and can be set so all your computers can connect to the network and the WG602 will automatically figure out the connection type and work accordingly.
The WG602 offers many security options to ensure your data is private. Both 40/64-bit and 128-bit WEP encryption is available, as well as Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA2-PSK). You can also use MAC address authentication to allow only authorized users onto the network.
Bridge and Repeater Mode In addition to functioning as an access point, the WG602 can also be used as a bridge and as a repeater. Used as a bridge, the device allows you to connect two LANS wirelessly; as a repeater, your wireless signal's range is extended so even the remote corners of your home or office can be covered.
The NETGEAR WG602 54 Mbps Wireless Access Point is backed by a 1-year warranty.
What's in the Box WG602 54 Mbps Wireless Access Point, vertical stand, power adapter, Ethernet cable, resource CD, user's guide, warranty/support information card.

D-Link DI-713P Wireless Broadband Router and Access Point with 3-Port Switch Review

Pros: reasonable price; three ports for wired connections; reasonably simple administration procedures and usable interface; integrated print server (parallel connector)
Cons: no support for bi-directional communications with my HP LaserJet 1200se (e.g., it no longer tells me I'm out of paper, etc.).
After scouring the Web for insight and equipment reviews (the PracticallyNetworked site was especially helpful) of the myriad of router options, I decided on this one from D-Link. My housemate and I needed to share our newly installed cable Internet service in our three-story house, so wireless seemed like the easiest option. I put the router in my office on the second floor, and he has no trouble accessing the Net by laptop from his office on the first floor, and I can usually get 500+ Kbps (on a PII-333 laptop running a NetGear PC card) in the living room on the third floor. 2Wire's bandwidth meter clocks about a 1.5 Mbps connection for my P4-1.2 wired directly to the router.
I haven't had to call D-Link for tech support, so I can't speak to their abilities/response time. I did use their Web site to download a firmware upgrade. All told, I had our wireless net up and running in less than an hour (which also included a call into RCN to get them to tweak our cable modem on their end).
One thing to bear in mind: pick access clients that are solid performers, whether they're PC card or USB devices. Routers like this are only the access point portion of the wireless equation -- speed and range can be easily hobbled by anemic clients that can't hold up their end of the bargain.

D-Link DI-713P Wireless Broadband Router and Access Point with 3-Port Switch Overview

The D-Link DI-713P is a broadband IEEE 802.11b compliant wireless gateway. It provides the ability to share a broadband connection as well as a print server function. You can share a DSL or cable modem connection through its three local 10/100 Ethernet ports or via its integrated Wireless IEEE 802.11b component. The DI-713P is equipped with a bidirectional LPT port to support a direct printer connection. Its integrated router and firewall provide NAT, DHCP, and packet filtering services between the local network and the Internet.
D-Link's DI-713P allows wireless LAN users to share the Internet connection while providing the security of 128-bit encryption. Static address support, integrated DHCP, PPPoE, and device name support will allow it to connect to nearly any broadband provider, whether cable or DSL based, and at the same time simplify local area network settings.
The DI-713P provides two levels of security support. First, it masks local users' IP addresses from others on the Internet, making it much more difficult for a hacker to target a machine on the network. Second, it can block and redirect certain ports to limit the services that outside users can access. Specific ports can be opened by the user to ensure that games and other Internet applications will run properly.
The router and access point combo also provides special pass-through for common VPN implementations including PPTP (Point to Point Tunneling Protocol), L2TP (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol) and IPSec*. The Virtual Server feature allows the user to expose HTTP, FTP, Game Servers, and other local services to be accessible to Internet users located outside the LAN. The User-Definable Application Sensing Tunnel feature allows the user to define the attributes to support special applications requiring multiple connections, such as Internet gaming, video conferencing, and Internet telephony. A DMZ setting can be applied to a single client behind the DI-713P to expose it to the Internet and ensure complete Internet application compatibility, even if specific ports are not known.
Unlike proxy server or NAT software that requires the software server to remain visible on the Internet, no local computers are directly externally visible when using the DI-713P. Also, the DI-713P, like broadband, is always on, removing the need to constantly boot a software server when Internet access is desired from a client.
Integrated DHCP services allow up to 252 users to obtain their IP address automatically on bootup from the DI-713P. Client machines require no software; simply set them to accept a dynamically assigned IP address and reboot. Each time they are powered up, the DI-713P will recognize them and set their IP address to instantly connect them to the LAN.
* PPTP, L2TP, and IPSec support compatibility are dependent on the platform used.

NETGEAR 5 GHz Wireless-N HD Access Point/Bridge (WNHDE111) Review

I bought one to pair with a Netgear Rangemax WNDR3700 Dual Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router. It does a wonderful job, and the setup was simple and operation reliable.
First of all, please note that this wireless product has a single operating band at 5GHz. It will not work with 2.4GHz routers or other 2.4Ghz devices that need to connect with this unit wirelessly.
The Netgear has two different operating modes, a bridge mode and an access point mode, switchable with a hardware switch which is so much better than a software enabled switch.
The bridge/access point distinction:
Allow me to digress a little bit here. The concepts of an "access point" and a "bridge" can be confusing to many. I've seen very technical definitions of these, but not really helpful for end-users. What always confused me was they never tell you what exactly connects to what, in what manner (wireless or ethernet?), and the signal is going from which unit to which unit doing what(signal direction and function). So let me try to describe this using the simplest possible language.
-- A wireless access point connects to clients (your PCs, or other end-user devices) wirelessly but connects to the Internet through an ethernet cable. There may be a modem involved there, but that's a detail not affecting the concept. That is, it gives the clients a wireless access to the Internet, therefore called a wireless access point.
-- A wireless bridge connects to the clients directly through ethernet cables but connects to the Internet wirelessly (usually through a wireless router or an access point). The wireless bridge has wireless receiving capability of course, but it does not have wireless broadcasting capability. Therefore it does not connect to the clients wirelessly and does not have an SSID for itself to broadcast like a wireless access point or wireless router would.
However, the above definitions are traditional pure Access Point and Bridge. With the newer WDS technology, bridges start to have wireless broadcasting capability as well. In the WDS setup, multiple bridges are used together to cover a wider area. A WDS bridge would on one hand work like a traditional bridge to wirelessly receive signals from the router or an upper-level bridge, while at the same time transmits signal wirelessly to the next level bridge. Even in a WDS setup, the key point to understand is still that the bridges don't assign IP addresses to other connected devices. They are sort of passive in terms of IP addressing, and that is why you can't simply connect two active routers to do what the router and a bridge can do. But all this is just for clarification and has nothing to do with the device reviewed here.
(By the way, a router is really a network switch plus an access point. The network switch takes care of the network address assignment and management, without which your devices may be connected, but the signals would not know where to go. This part is usually clear to most people.)
I read another reviewer complaining that you need two Netgear bridges to make a real "bridge". Obviously, the reviewer intuitively defines a bridge as something that wirelessly connects (bridges) two non-wireless ends. If a wireless bridge were supposed to do that, then you indeed always need two units to complete a bridge. This is inherently true, because in any technology, to wirelessly connect two sides, you need both sides to have wireless capability. If you have a transmitter on one side, there must be a receiver on the other side, or vice versa. In the field of Wi-Fi, the routers came out first and provided wireless capability at one end. The other end is typically a wireless client such as a wireless adapter card. But sometimes you may want several PCs to share a "united wireless adapter" to connect to a wireless router. That is, the shared "united wireless adapter" wirelessly connects to the router on behalf of the several local PCs while grouping the local PCs through wired connections. This is the concept of a bridge in Wi-Fi. It is always just one side, assuming that you've got a wireless router or access point on the other side.
When and why you need a bridge?
For example, in my case, I needed a bridge. I already had a wireless router placed in a room that has direct access to the Internet through fiber optics. Several computers in the house can individually access the wireless router wirelessly, so I don't need a bridge just to access the Internet. However, these computers are grouped together in a different area. They could benefit from a bridge placed nearby. The bridge wirelessly connects to the router, while the computers in this group connect to the bridge using reliable ethernet cables.
There are several benefits of the above bridge arrangement. First, I would no longer need to worry about wireless cards installed on separate computers, etc. All computers in this group connect to the bridge using ethernet cable. As long as the wireless connection between the bridge and the router is reliable, all computers in that group enjoy reliable Internet access.
Second, the bridge allows me to place printers nearby the computers which are in a different room away from the room where the router is located. In my case, placing the printers in the router room is absolutely not an option. If I had that option, buying a router that has a built-in network printing capabilities would have solved the problem quite easily. But if I place the printers in the room where PCs are (away from where the router is placed), I face two options to choose from in order to network these printers. The first would be using a wireless printer server. The second would be using a wireless bridge plus a non-wireless print server. The second option is far superior. A simple and reliable non-wireless print server connecting to the bridge using ethernet cable turns out to be an extremely reliable solution. This may sound trivial, but in reality, if you have ever dealt with wireless print servers, you will appreciate the significance of this non-wireless ability.
The performance of NetGear WNHDE111:
With all that background, I'm glad to report that the Netgear bridge works flawlessly.
The setup was extremely simple. I did not use the CD that comes along with it. I directly accessed the control page of the bridge, and once there the setup took only a few minutes. It's just a matter of entering the SSID and the password of the router which this bridge is supposed to communicate wirelessly. In fact, the most time-consuming part was actually to find the default IP address of the bridge in order to access its control page. The bridge I bought did not come with a hardcopy manual, so I had to go to NetGear's website to find and download one to check. It turns out to be 192.168.0.241 for the bridge(or 192.168.0.240 for the access point). Why can't they just print such simple yet important information on the device itself? It would have made things so much easier.
There is an important detail that may be worth explaining. When you access the bridge the first time before it is already hooked up with the router, the operating IP address of the bridge is the above-mentioned default IP. However, once the bridge is connected to the router and joined the network, it would gain a different IP address unless it has been set to receive a static IP address from the router. You may set it to manual IP address assignment, and give it a static IP address which you can remember. Anyway, if you try to access the bridge using the above default IP address but couldn't, it may be because the bridge is already part of the network and has gained a different IP address. In this case, you have two different options to access the bridge. One option is to temporarily and manually disconnect your computer from the network, and set your computer's network properties of TCP/IPv4 to be in the same subnet with the bridge. Another option is to log into your router's control page to find what network IP address has been assigned to the bridge and use your computer to access the bridge by the new IP address. I highly recommend using a static IP address for the bridge.
My only complaint about this product is that it has only two ethernet ports. This is not enough for even a very simple application. Two PCs and a print server would require three ethernet ports, thus would need a separate multiport switch to be connected with this bridge. This is too cheap. The thing is not small at all. It's rather largish, and they could have put eight ethernet ports on this thing without any problem. Just four would make such a difference. I believe adding two extra ethernet ports would only cost less than one dollar in manufacturing.

802.11AG Outdoor High Power 600MW Client Bridge/access Point Review

Having more than 13 years under my belt as a multi-certified IT consultant often engaging projects independently or as the technical lead for clients such as JPMorgan-Chase, Walt Disney's EPCOT Center, Orlando International Airport, Gateway, Hewlett-Packard, and more, I should have known better than to think this low-priced unit with such high-performance claims was too good to be true... and I would have been right.
The goal was to bridge a network where the EOC-5611 and it's predecessor, the now discontinued EOC-5610, were 240 feet apart. With direct unobstructed line-of-sight, mounted atop a 25' mast, and fitted with high-quality ethernet cable, the signal began to fade at 100 feet and was completely degraded by 150 feet, regardless of band or antenna type used. The unit likewise performed as poorly when used as an access point. A good signal could be achieved between 80-100 feet, but dropped so significantly that a connection could not be made past 150 feet.
In my tests, this unit failed to produce more than 10mW using the internal panel antenna and no more than 13mW using a 9dBi external omni-directional antenna for both the 802.11a and 802.11b/g bands - nowhere near the company's 600mW claim and more akin to consumer-grade indoor access points in the sub-$50 price range offered by LinkSys, NetGear, or Belkin.
Interestingly, phone conversations with the technical support personnel at EnGenius revealed that the unit, when fitted with the external omni antenna mentioned above, could expect to reach only a maximum of 400mW and that the internal antenna was only for the 802.11a band... that an external antenna was necessary if one wished to use the 802.11b/g band. They suggested that I spend hundreds more per unit for a parabolic, yagi, or patch directional antenna to achieve a strong signal for the 240' distance I required. Amazing... the advertising boasts that this unit is "high-power" commercial-grade client premises equipment, easily capable of 1-30km transmission range. Yet, in reality, I can throw a baseball a greater distance than this unit can transmit a wireless signal!
Based on the information presented here, at Amazon, and information and data sheets obtained at the EnGenius web site, I recommended this product to a client with a low-budget for the client/bridge solution. What should have been a quick and easy install resulted in many hours of on-site configuration and troubleshooting, and ultimately caused a strained client relationship. Although I salvaged the client, it cost me an additional $1300 to replace these units with a pair of D-Link DWL-2700AP's to do so. They work flawlessly and I have never looked back.
If I could give Zero stars for this product, I would. Unless you love headaches, frustration, and losing clients... run away, run far away from the EOC-5610/EOC-5611.

Diamond Multimedia 300Mbps 802.11n Wireless Repeater and Range Extender (WR300N) Review

Hallelujah! I now have wireless all over the house (3000 sq ft). I have tried another repeater device (are you listening ASUS?). Worked for a couple of days, never had much of an extended range. It would lose the signal frequently. Finally gave up. Now this one, this is the champ. So easy to set up. Used my laptop. Disconnected my wireless connection. Plugged in the Diamond. Connected the Ethernet cable (enclosed) to the Diamond and the laptop. Opened Firefox. There was the setup interface. A couple of clicks and I was in business. I plugged in the Diamond in the hallway, and now I have a great signal all the way to the far end of the house. Get this one. So easy. More importantly (well, just as importantly) it works. Happy, happy.

Diamond Multimedia 300Mbps 802.11n Wireless Repeater and Range Extender (WR300N) Overview

The WR300N device can take an existing 802.11n wireless signal, repeat and send it to a longer range where it is too far away for the router or access point to reach. It eliminates the cable wires while providing the same reliable network connection. It can repeat and extend the wireless signal from virtually any 802.11n wireless router or access point that is launched on the market. It is backwards compatible with the 802.11b/g router or access point.

Linksys-Cisco WIRELESS G EXTERIOR ACCESS ( WAP54GPE ) Review

I have installed 2 of these and both have the same bad performance issues. I have to reboot them several times a day because the device loses its connection between it's own wireless interface and it's own wired interface. If your computer connects via the wireless, you will loose access to anything past the device. You can not even ping the device's own IP address. If yoiu reboot it, then it works for a while. I did a little more research and found out that this is a common problem. I am now trying to return them.

D Link AirPlus DWL-900AP+ Wireless 22MBPS Access Point Review

I bought another one of these to repeat my existing 900AP+'s signal to extend the range of my wireless network. It works great since I set it all up 2 weeks ago. I am not able to go all the way out to my backyard by the pool and still have Internet access on my laptop. This is very convenient when swimming or just laying and you get the urge to look something up on the Internet, but usually you don't because the PC is so far away. Not anymore. I am now able to bring my laptop out with me and maybe watch a DVD outside while I BBQ or just drink with my friends.
The repeater function looks like it only repeats other D-Link products. It also brings the speeds down to 11Mbps when you are connected to the network via the repeater. If you can get a signal with the main AP, then you are able to maintain your 22Mbps speeds.
Everything else about this AP has worked great for me as well and I'd highly recommend it.

D Link AirPlus DWL-900AP+ Wireless 22MBPS Access Point Overview

The D-Link AirPlus DWL-900AP+ can be configured to perform in any one of four modes--as a wireless access point, as a point-to-point bridge with another access point, as a point-to-multipoint wireless bridge, or as a wireless client. It also includes an embedded DHCP server that, once enabled, will automatically assign IP addresses to wireless clients. It also eliminates the need for a separate DHCP server on the network. This unique feature is ideal for quickly creating a wireless local area network in offices or other workplaces, or a temporary network at trade shows or other events.
The DWL-900AP+ also features 256-bit WEP encryption for a higher level of security for your data and wireless communications.
The DWL-900AP+ is fully compatible with the IEEE 802.11b standard, making it interoperable with all existing 802.11b-compliant devices. But unlike standard 802.11b access points, its data transfer rate can be up to 20 percent faster. When your wireless network is comprised of other D-Link AirPlus products, such as the DWL-520+ wireless PCI adapter, the DWL-650+ wireless CardBus adapter, and the DI-614+ wireless router--transfer rates can be as high as 22 Mbps.

D-Link DWL-1000AP 11Mb Wireless LAN Access Point 802.11b Review

Products Tested: D-Link DWL-1000AP 11Mb Wireless LAN Access Point 802.11b D-Link DWL-650 11Mb Wireless PCMCIA LAN Network Card 802.11b vs. Linksys WAP11 - Instant Wireless Network Access Point Linksys WPC11 - Instant Wireless Network PC Card
Computer Hardware: Laptop: Dell Inspiron 600mhz, W2k Network: NT 4.0 Server, W2K Server Switches: 3Com and Linksys
Quality: After working with dlink first, linksys blew away dlink on the feel of quality and workmanship. As we all know, these components are so miniaturized that they could put them into any light-weight enclosure. dlink chose the light packaging approach....feels "cheap." linksys chose the mid-weight package...you feel as if it has higher quality...and you got something for your $250-300! linksys chose the dual antenna design over the single on the dlink. Technically, I am not sure if it is better but the actual reception really is... These are subjective and personal factors but for most, it makes a difference.
Ease of Use: From the documentation, to the support, to the software, it is really apparent dlink cut costs everywhere and with things they shouldn't. The setup is extremely confusing, the software is buggy...really, and the docs are horrible. In my manual, every other page did not have printing on it...quality control missed this! Linksys...even though I had to use the USB setup at first (dlink does not have a USB port on their access unit), the configuration was simple. The docs actually explained the parameters on the configuration screens. Once I set the IP address to one recognized on my network (I am not using DHCP), I used the linksys SNMP configuration tool to set and adjust the other parameters. I have a laptop. When using the wireless network card on the dlink, if you eject the card, the next time you re-insert the card, it does not remember your setting. You have to go back and set the parameters in order to get the card to function again. I called dlink tech support on this...on hold forever, hung up, and no call back...even when they asked and I left my mobile number, just in case... On the linksys, when I re-inserted the wireless card, it remembered the setting.
Service and Usability: Both products have a signal and quality meter in their utilities. One important note...the distance specs on both of these products (I think the 802.11b category overall) are NOT accurate. Inside of your home and through walls, etc., expect much less. How much less...you need to try it out to be sure. If you have line of sight to the access unit, these distances will go up. I mounted the access unit in my living room, on top of the entertainment center. I chose this location b/c it had the best reception. With the dlink, in the master bedroom (through one wall!), I was *barely* able to use the network...0-40 on the signal meter. On one occasion, once the dlink card lost the network, I could not get back on?? The total distance to the access unit was 30ish feet. With linksys, my signal was consistent at 40-60...once or twice is dipped to 20-30 but came right back up. I also tried a configuration with the dlink access unit and linksys card. They did work together but I could not improve the signal quality. I concluded that the dlink access unit was one of the problems. When I used the dlink wireless card, several times my computer shut down automatically??
Overall: Save tons of time and money...just buy the linksys system...access point and cards. Linksys is priced well and makes a quality offering. It is very clear to me that dlink is just focused on price and cutting their cost.

Cisco WAP4410N Wireless-N Access Point - PoE/Advanced Security Review

I recently purchased two of these Cisco WAP4410N WAPs. The goal was to help my brother-in-law cover his large home with good quality wireless. Based on my experience doing previous WAP installations, my guess was that is would take between three and six WAPs to full cover his large house (which has lots of brick and steel) with good quality coverage. I was impressed that by strategically positioning the units I was able to cover the entire house with only two of these WAPs. The coverage consisted of three floors (one was a finished basement).
The setup of these units was simple, the firmware is stable, and configuration was straight=forward. Since they were setup they have worked flawlessly and required no further attention.
The only thing a bit unusual (for those used to Netgear, Linksys, etc.) is that you have to setup a Cisco account (no charge just register online) to be able to download firmware, etc. This ended being unnecessary because the firmware in the unit was up-to-date.
If you're looking for really good WAPs that support Wireless-N and have lots of configuration options (e.g., Mesh, Multiple SSIDs, etc.) I highly recommend this unit. It has a slightly higher price than other (consumer units) you can buy, but it definitely deserves the "business-class" label that Cisco gives it.

Formerly Linksys Business Series, now Cisco Small Business Wireless Access Points, the WAP4410N is an 802.11n access point that provides secure, high performance network access. You can now extend your wired network to mobile employees within the workplace to keep them connected and productive.

ZyXEL GS108B 8 Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch with Metal Housing & Green Energy Saving Technology Review

The ZyXEL G105B switch is a very small and compactly built(5"x3"x1") Gigabit Ethernet switch. To boot, it's made from metal and therefore very durable (reminds me of the old NetGear stuff). The efficient part comes in with power consumption where it sips 3 watts max when all 5 ports are in use. This switch is even smart enough to go into power saving mode if none or only some of the interfaces are active.
While streaming HD contect from Netflix, the switch remained cold to the touch which is an indicator of how much juice it uses. The metal case sort of act as a heat sink as well.
All the ports are auto-sensing so no need to worry about cross-over cables.
I'm using this switch with ZyXEL's PLA407 wall Plug Ethernet extenders which allow me to extend my wired network out to my entertainment center where I can connect my XBOX, BluRay, and HDDVD players into this switch. I get a nice 95 mbps connection with full duplex using this switch (speed reduction due to the nature of the PLA407 devices and not this switch by any means).

ZyXEL GS108B 8 Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch with Metal Housing & Green Energy Saving Technology Overview

ZyXEL's GS-108B 10/100/1000Mbps desktop switches are designed for reliable high-performance networks. Thanks to the non-blocking switching fabric in full-duplex mode, the maximum speed can reach up to 2000Mbps per port; the Store-and-Forward service brings low-latency and error-free packet delivery. With these features, the transmission efficiency can be boosted dramatically. With the N-way auto-negotiation function, the GS-108B automatically connects to its network counterparts with the highest possible network speed and activates duplex mode automatically. All it takes to enliven your network is just plugging in the cable, and no manual configuration is required. The stylish compact metal housing fits any working environment. GS-108B comes with different port configurations for affordable and reliable SOHO network expansion needs.

NETGEAR Wireless-N Access Point Review

HI All,
The Netgear WN802Tv2 is an Access Point that is meant for an existing network that already has a router setup. In other words, you will need to have a wired or older wireless-g router in place before you can use this device for Wireless-N Connectivity.
Basics first:
Whats in the Box? Access Point, Ac Adapter, Ethernet Cable, Netgear CD, Quick Start guide, Warranty Card, and Stand.
Setup:
So begins the install and testing. I was mildly irritated when I read the quick start guide. Most of you that have routers with a 192.168.0.x address will be ok and can install this thing in a jiffy where as others that use different ip addresses like 192.168.1.x will have to go through a few extra steps as I did. Basically this access point comes configured with a 192.168.0.x address out of the box...therefore you must follow the quick start guide and first connect it to your computer with an ethernet cable to configure it. That being said, if your network provides 192.168.0.x addresses and you are not using 192.168.0.233 you should be ok to plug this in and set it up via your browser.
Once the IP situation is ready to go you simply open your web browser and go to the 192.168.0.233 ip address. Log in with the username and password on the quick start card and you are given access to setup the access point with your preferences. Here are some of the basics:
1. Upon Entry - Name of Access point and Country it is used in.
2. Time Zone and If you would like to use a internet time server.
3. IP Settings - you can manually assign it an ip address or have it use dhcp to get one from your existing router.
4. Wireless Mode - 11b, 11BG, 11NG - all at 2.4ghz (another disappointment).
Once you get more deeper into the setup you are able to go through a multitude of wireless options which include things like the broadcasting of your wireless id, security, quality of service etc. This access point does include Quality of Service settings for Wi-FI Multimedia (WMM) which basically provides preference to multimedia based content over the wireless network.
This access point allows for a good array of security settings and supports Wep 128/152bit, WPA, etc....it also adds support for Radius Settings which can be found in an enterprise environment.
Wireless Performance:
This is probably one of the hardest tests to run but I was able to get some results. I used a commonly known speed test site to test my broadband connectivity whilst using the Netgear access point. As background, I have about 15-20mbps download and 2mbps upload via Comcast. The speed test on this router was similar to what I have achieved on my D-Link and Apple Airport Extremes. For that it gets a 5/5.
Speed testing was not enough and now it was time to stream a hd quality movie from this device onto my ps3 from a mac.....this is probably where this access point will shine. I usually stream movies and get a bit of stutter here and there...so I wanted to make sure I tested a movie that I have played before. I started the the movie and saw a stutter for about one second...but once it started streaming it played on and I did not notice any of the usual issues. The WMM QOS does work (wi-fi multimedia quality of service). More testing will continue and I will update my review to indicate the good or bad.Now for my thoughts and opinion on the product:
The size of the device is nice and the look is perfect. The picture on the product page does not do it any justice. The LED's are perfectly light and not too bright...they wont take your eye out.
I like the documentation, it will allow any user from novices to advanced users to be able to get up and running quickly with this device....More advanced documentation is on the resource CD. Note...you do not need the CD to install the device as the quickstart will guide you in the right direction at the get go.
The price is high - If you are going to spend over $100 to buy an access point you are better off spending the same amount to buy a new router which has built in Wireless N abilities. Even if you dont need another router, you can buy one and use it as an access point.
NO 5ghz - Another negative - most wireless-n routers are now able to broadcast in 5ghz mode. This router does not have that ability...and again for something with this price point it should. You can also spend $10-20 more and buy a dual band router which broadcasts in both 2.4ghz and 5ghz modes. With all of the wireless around our homes and offices, it is a must to have the 5ghz band so our computers can run un-affected by other wireless devices such as cordless phones etc....
Wireless performance is on par with other products and the WMM-QOS features make this access point shine.
Last but not least - and this may be just for me - but I think that Netgear can make this device ship so that it can pick up a DHCP address from our existing networks. This way everyone that buys one is able to plug it in and get to setting it up. I have seen this done on a multitude of products and Netgear can surely adopt those feature sets. I am a little knowledgeable in these things, but for a home user I would not want them changing ip addresses on their computers and plugging routers into them...its a bit on the complex side.
I think there are many improvements to be had on this item and price is definitely one of them. While I like the performance of the wireless, I do not like other things, as stated above, thus my rating is on the low side.
3/5 for me....sorry Netgear.
NOTE: Yes, I received this product for free from Amazon...for which I am grateful. My review on the other hand is as HONEST as can be after using/testing for 2 hours. I am fortunate to be a member of the Vine but I try my best to make sure that anyone buying a product I have been given gets a honest and un-biased review/opinion. Thanks!

Cisco WAP2000 Wireless-G Access Point - POE Review

I bought this product to provide secure wireless services to our company network. I was pleasantly surprised that it has support for multiple SSIDs with tagged VLAN support (useful for creating a "guest" network for visitors, as well as a separate secure internal network). It supports WPA2-Enterprise, which I'm using together with Windows Server 2003 IAS to allow domain users to be authenticated to the network using their windows login automatically. I was fully expecting problems deploying this somewhat bleading-edge feature, but so far it's worked perfectly (aside from the hassles associated with Microsoft's poor group policy support for WPA2 in XP Pro). The unit has never requiring a restart since I installed it. The physical hardware seems well made also. I'm not using the POE support, because the range on this AP is good enough to allow it to sit in our phone room and cover the entire floor. Overall, this product feels like it's benefited from the Cisco influence, unlike some of Linksys' other recent efforts.

Cisco WAP2000 Wireless-G Access Point - POE Overview

The WAP2000 is a Wireless Access Point ideal for small businesses that want to expand their existing wired networks or create new wireless networks for the workforce or guests. It features RangeBooster technology that is compatible to standard 802.11g but with a range up to two times farther and throughput by up to 35 faster. Unlike ordinary wireless technologies that are hampered by wireless signals that reflect off walls, ceilings, and other objects, RangeBooster uses these multiple signals with two smart receivers at each end (router or access point and client adapter) to boost range and throughput speeds. As a result, a RangeBooster solution reduces or eliminates wireless signal deadspots in offices and other buildings so users can connect to the network in more areas. The WAP2000 comes with 3 dBi antennas for increased power, also helping to extend the range of the Access Point.

ECB3500 Business Class WirelessAccess Point Review

We replaced a 2004 D Link wireless router that worked fine until moving from a Condo to a House. The signal was so bad, that it wouldn't reach past one room, even when coupled with a repeater!
This access point is the Mac Daddy of wireless access points. WOW. We went from no signal in the next room to 5 bars anywhere in the house. The access point was fairly easy to set up compared to other access points I've worked with lately. A detailed instruction manual is included, and though it is somewhat generic, it is far superior than directions included with other access points.
Setting up the SSID is a bid different than some traditional access points, but once we figured that out, things were easy. When we changed the setting to AP Router, the settings somewhat blew up, but since the device isn't actually a router, it wasn't important. We just reset the device and kept it set as an access point.
Definitely a fan!!!!

USB Wireless Lan Adapter 150Mbps Review

So I have been using this adapter for just over a week. My router is in the next room, 7 feet away, and while I do have continuous signal, I only get one bar out of 5 the majority of the time. I won't complain for the price, but I would be hesitant in buying this if you were using it at a farther distance from your router. I would try discovering the range it has myself, however I am using a desktop PC and not a laptop. Hope this may help others in their decision.

Cisco-Linksys WAP54G Wireless-G Access Point Review

I'm using the unit in a REPEATER mode. My house have 3 floors and my router (WRT54G) is located in the basement. I get a signal of 11 Mbps on the sec flr using a centrino powered notebook. The signal would drop to 1 Mbps after some use and the only way to get the signals back is to to reboot the notebook for some reason or go to the first flr. Hence, decided to get this unit and use it as a repeater.
Steps that worked for me are as follows:
01. Disable any security you have on the router (I'm using WEP) and enable SSID broadcast prior to any configuration .
02. Configure the unit using the setup disk and provided the ff:.
---- Provided a different SSID (or you can provide the same SSID) with enabled broadcast.
---- No encription
---- The same transmission channel (Chan 11) as with my router
---- New password
03. Exited program setup. Run browser and connect to the AP interface using the default address [...]
04. Configured the AP in REPEATER MODE placing my router's wireless MAC address as the repeated source signal.
05. Saved the setup.
06. Test if working by removing the wire behind the AP. On your PC/Notebook, open up a command window (START,RUN, type in "cmd" and click [OK]). Type in "ping 192.168.1.245" and press [ENTER]. You should see something like "Reply from 192.168.1.245 bytes=32 time=3ms TTL=225". If you get a "Request timed out." then that means your AP cannot be seen in your network and was not configured successfully go through STEP#1 again.
07. If successful, you need to enable security back (NOTE: At this point, the AP is running stand alone with no wires connected at the back from the router). Since I'm using WEP, connect to the AP using a browser at [...]
Go to wireless security and enable WEP and add the key codes and save your setup.
08. Now enable security back on the router with same key as you have on the AP and save your setup.
09. Test connection again by running STEP#6.
10. Place the AP where you want it to.
11. With a wireless PC/Notebook, scan for wireless networks. You should see the new SSID as well as the old one. Connect to it so that your PC/Notebook would save that information.
12. Connect to your AP, disable SSID broadcast, save setup.
13. Connect to your roter, disable SSID broadcast, save setup.
14. You're done!I placed the WAP54G on the third floor. After all is said and done, my signal was boosted to 45 Mbps (max at 54 Mbps). Works like a charm!!!
NOTE:
- These procedures is specifically if you want to configure your AP as a REPEATER.
- If you configure the AP with WEP security on the get go, you will never be able to get it to work!! I spent hours on this to no avail.
- You can use the same SSID. I used a different one because I want to see what wireless unit I am connecting to when i transfer from floor to floor.
UPDATE 031810
The unit I believe is starting to die on me. My internet access will get cut off all of a sudden and it has been happening frequently (like 4-5 times a week). I have to unplug then plug it back to make it function again. I might upgrade my system to the WRT610N and WAP610N soon.
UPDATE 033110
I decided to get a new WAP54G instead since reading through the WAP610N manual, there is no provision for a REPEATER mode. I placed the old one on the first floor. So now, I have the WRT54G on the basement, my old WAP54G on the first floor and my new WAP54G (with a NETGEAR 5 port switch connected to it) on the 3rd floor. I noticed that with the new one, my web browsing is a lot faster compared to the old one!
UPDATE 041110
So I had the NEW WAP54G for a couple of days since my last update and I still had the same problem of getting disconnected intermittently. I tried shutting down the OLD unit totally but the issue persists with the new unit so it looks like the AP is not the problem. Now, my IPOD TOUCH 32GB 3Gen needed repair and has been out of commission since last Friday 04/09 (bought this last January). And guess what? I have had no problems with my WIFI connection since then (both APs running). I have to see if the replacement Ipod screws up my wifi connection again but I do think I found out the culprit for my WIFI issues.
UPDATE 042510
I got my new replacement Ipod Touch a week ago. My WIFI failure started again but not as frequent. Now, I always turn off the Ipod's Wifi when I'm not using it. I guess I'm stuck with it.
UPDATE 072610
When I got the IOS 4 software update for the Ipod Touch, my WIFI issues disappeared. :)

Cisco-Linksys WAP54G Wireless-G Access Point Overview

The Linksys Wireless-G access point lets you connect Wireless-G (802.11g) or Wireless-B (802.11b) devices to your network. Because both standards are built-in, you can protect your investment in existing 802.11b infrastructure, and migrate your network clients to the new screaming-fast Wireless-G standard as your needs grow.
For more information on the differences between an access point and a router with access point, see the following table: To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G access point can encrypt all wireless transmissions. The MAC address filter lets you decide exactly who has access to your wireless network. Configuration is a snap with the Web browser-based configuration utility.
Wireless-G is the upcoming 54 Mbps wireless networking standard that's almost five times faster than the widely deployed Wireless-B (802.11b) products found in homes, businesses, and public wireless hotspots around the country--but since they share the same 2.4 GHz radio band, Wireless-G devices can also work with existing 11 Mbps Wireless-B equipment.
Future-proof your wireless network with the Linksys Wireless-G access point. You'll enjoy Wireless-B connectivity today, and be prepared for a high-speed Wireless-G tomorrow.
The Linksys Wireless-G access point is compatible with Windows 95, 98, Me, NT 4.0, 2000, and XP.

TRENDnet 300Mbps Wireless N Access Point TEW-638APB (Black) Review

Home networking can be a real pain especially for someone like me who knows enough to be dangerous but not enough to be a network installer. I have a wireless router burried in my basement that wasn't getting signal to my upstairs part of the house. I tried two other different products 1) two routers connected to each other and 2) a Hawking repeater. I ended up wasting a lot of time with them and they just didnt work or had compatibility issues. I took a plunge on the no brand trendnet based on this other positive review and he was 100% right. The price is 50% cheaper than the comparable Linksys N switch and does exactly as advertised. Setup took 5 minutes and I now have coverage all over my house. No issues so far.
